I ate at Noma a few months ago and I'll post the pictures later today if I get a chance.
As to justifying spending that much money on a meal: it's something you're going to remember for the rest of your life. It's an education in something most people don't even know you can get an education in. Chefs on the cutting edge are trying to make you think about the foods. That's the justification behind the molecular gastronomy. Is it silly? Um, YEAH, it's silly as shit. But it's fun, and food is supposed to be fun. I'm all about the burger, I could talk to you for hours about the burger. (In fact, since this thread is about all restuarants and not just the hoitiest of toitiest, I will probably summarize the excellent Kuma's Corner in Chicago at some point). But if you go through life eating nothing but Burgers and the food necessary to carry your body through the day, you're missing it. People spend 700 bucks on a meal for the same reason they spend 700 bucks on a painting. To appreciate the chef not as a line cook but as an artist.
If this doesn't make sense hopefully it will after I post Noma, which has a lower silliness than Fat Duck or El Bulli due to total lack of molecular gastronomy.
