How many of us out there pay homage to our musical roots? No, I'm not talking about Nirvana, but also not all the way back to the Beatles and Zeppelin. I'm refering to the vagabonds that brought us the forms of rock I (and many of us here) hold so dear.

How many of you still spin albums by Fugazi, Minor Threat, or Husker Du? Hell, what about Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, or Slayer? And there is always the Pixies or the Cure.

I'm not really ranting about anything, or really trying to make a point. I guess all I really want to say is "thanks" to all these bands.

Now I'm gonna go listen to some Norma Jean (solid state tour tomorrow, beeyatch).

Why do we have to "pay homage" by listening to this music? What if we think it sucks? What if we think listening to music simply because they're from our "musical roots" is bullshit? Whatever happened to just listening what you want to listen to, instead of listening to music to feel like you're satisfying the music gods by listening to music that you "should be" listening to? (That was a lot of "listening's" wow!)

Now, I'm gonna go listen to some 311, 'cause I like the new song by them I just heard today...beeyatch.

I still spin albums of Black Flag, and The Circle Jerks. I have always paid homage to bands like the Beatles and Bob Dylan. The Beatles and Bob Dylan were all my dad listened to when I was growing up, so it is what i listened to. I think however, a very large part of my musical roots are in Nirvana.

I still routinely listen to all of the shit that came up on. Music has the ability to take you to completely different mindsets.

Example... everytime I hear the Misfits "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight" I'm brought back to the night I should've died in a car wreck.

everytime I hear anything off Propaghandi's first album, I'm taken to riding in a van full of equipment on our way to the first big show in Mishawaka.

I can't hear anything by the Suicide Machines without thinking about how I somehow saw them open for everyone from the Descendents to Rancid... I've probably seen them 10 times, but never went to see them.

Dead Kennedy's, Operation Ivy, old (read: good) Rancid, Chaos UK, Black Flag, Samhain, Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, Public Enemy, Eazy E, NWA, Geto Boys, De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, 2Live Crew, Lordz of Brooklyn, the Pharcyde, the Germs, the Ramones, Green River, REM, Iggy Pop, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Revolting Cocks, Ministry, Cypress Hill, Danzig, Youth Brigade, the Jim Carrol band... all groups who I don't listen to nearly as much as I should anymore, but will always hold a special place in my heart.

You know, I just pulled out some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers today......this is weird timing.

Anyway, you may not like the music/musicians that has pre-cursored what we have today, but you can't help but realize that without them, we might still have what we have today, but it probably wouldn't be as good.

I mean, if you're looking at the right stuff. If you're looking at the wrong stuff, then my theory turns to shit.

Frankly, there's some older stuff that I'm not particularly interested in. It might be poor production stuff, or the fact that it's just not up to what I like in this day and age (c'mon you know you do the same exact thing) but there are other times when it's exactly what I love to sit back and listen to and realize how fucking genius these people were.

I read the newest Rolling Stone the other day. It pays homage to the 50 greatest musicians/icons of the century (the past one) and I couldn't help but feel so fucking lucky to be living in a time when there's such musical diversity and endless people out there creating insanely beautiful and amazing music. Sure, there's alot of shit to wade through, but that just makes the gems that much more worth it.
