So I checked out UW Sunday night. I was pretty impressed. Their Union is right on the lake front. They serve draft beer, brats, burgers etc right out the back of the union. I also walked downtown on state street which starts right at the end of campus. It was tits, imagine broad ripple or kirkwood, and multiply the awesomeness factor by approximately 100X.

Yeah, I spent some time up here was tits. One of my biggest regrets about college is not going to a cool area/cool school. Honestly Indiana, as fun as [visiting] IU was (ball state sucked except for parties), all Indiana schools pale extremely in comparison to some of the other great universities around the US. If I ever have kids I will probably do everything I can to make sure they go to school out of state...unless I happen to be living in a state with some awesome Universities.

tl;dr? Indiana sucks a lot.

Yes, school is overpriced. Yes, it's over-rated in "necessity" as most of the things important in career fields, could be taught on the job, but unfortunately that just isn't the way it works for the most part.

Similar statement IF I have kids, chances are, I'll try to provide the best life for them possible. I'll try to give them as much advice about how to do things and what I would have done differently in life.

With that being said, they probably won't fucking listen.

I've never been educated and I can criticize it pretty easily. I make about the same amount as all my friends who went to collage do, only I'm not $10,000 in the hole.

There are clearly people that didn't get higher education who, depending on where they grew up, how they were raised, what sorts of people they surround themselves with and how much willpower/desire to learn, can match/overcome the abilities of those who have gone to college. In the same way that a person who goes to college can still come out of it close-minded and dumb as fuck with almost no personal change whatsoever, intellectually or otherwise. But its glaringly obvious that most people who don't pursue higher education remain in a lower socioeconomic class than those who do.

Nobody thinks college is some sort of lofty goal anymore.

Being in a position where I look at a lot of applications on a regular basis (we fire a lot of people) I can tell you that 99.7% of the time we will take someone who is in college with a schedule that we have to work around over someone who has never been to college and has thirty years of "retail experience." Keep in mind this is for a job that pays $8.00 an hour.

We've recently come to a "silent understanding" that nobody without a college degree can be promoted into management, regardless of ability. It's not an "official policy" but a "wink wink, nudge nudge" kinda thing.

But those of us who have gone through college have a much easier time minimizing its impact on where we are today than those who never went.
