The Universe within 12.5 Light Years - The Nearest stars

Pretty awesome when you think about it. Assuming we don't kill ourselves and are able to either develop some kind of faster, cost-efficient space travel (as obviously light speed is out of the question, and even near light speed is out of the question for at least a long time), it would only take us 20-30 years to get to some of these star systems.

I can totally see a "stellar neighborhood" in our little corner of the cosmos happening here.

F3lix, you are a smart guy, but I'm honestly a bit surprised by some of your comments in regard to religion lately. I know I get pretty heated myself, but I usually have a bit more substantive things to say than snarky, 16 year-old-esque comments. This is one of those that doesn't really contribute a lot to any discussion, nor was God implied in any part of that post.

So...I don't really get...why you even said it? It's a mass of gases that churns out stars, commonly called a nebula or "star factory", and there are :blonde: an astronomical number of them.

Ugly Bastard 01-11-2011 10:55 AM

Did you know Alpha Centauri is a binary star system (two stars close together that appear as one star to the naked eye) and that those two objects are actually not the closest star to our Sun and that a much smaller star called Proxima Centauri is? Because I didn't.

The speed of light is only impossible for objects with mass. Since we don't really know what mass is or where it comes from, this may seem to make light speed travel impossible. But if we could figure out how to have zero mass, or even negative mass, light speed, or even faster than light speed, would be possible (in theory). There are some theories that mass comes from placement within an ether field or something of that nature. But why do photon particles seem to exist within this field but have no mass? This shit is OFF THE CHAIN!

I've wondered this a lot myself.

Why try to go the speed of light when you can go 100 times the speed of love?

Without even clicking on that link, that would fuck up so many things it's not even worth worrying about.

EDIT - misleading title much, io9?

The red supergiant star Betelgeuse (WHICH IS about 640 light-years away from Earth) is getting ready to go supernova, and when it does Earth will have a front-row seat. The explosion will be so bright that Earth will briefly seem to have two suns in the sky.
Usually I like Io9, but this article kind of pissed me off.

Obviously, you did click on that link huh?!?! Misleading post much?

As in "before I even click on the link, I can tell that this is either going to be some devastating doomsday prophesy or a falsity -- I'll click on it and update it." Which I did. Hence the "EDIT".
