Why a derp?

I was talking with UB just now about the amazingness of cell phones. He just got a new iPhone, you see, and it is in pristine shape. Sure, the scratches will come with time...but, even after several drops, I'd place a wager that the thing will still be working like a champ.
Sure, my piece of shit phone isn't made by Apple, but it has the same story. I've dropped it more times than I can count. I've even half-assedly spiked it in anger (never angry enough to actually spike it with intent to destroy). I have even drop-kicked the motherfucker out of frustration. It still ticks, though. (Note that it is buggy...which has been the cause of the infrequent spikes/drop kicks...but this bugginess is from me loading it with shitty applications that I never use, not due to the drops) EVEN WITH ALL OF THIS SAID, it doesn't change the fact that one of the worst feelings a person can experience in life comes in the microseconds between a phone slipping out of their paw and said phone slamming into the ground. And, if we're talking about a real fall here, we're also looking at a loss of battery, a back-cover removal and, if applicable, a stylus flying like a rocket. Let's share these such moments. My most catastrophic phone-dropping came on a sidewalk in Las Vegas. Drunk as a motherfucker (probably goes without being said), I walked and texted in from of Caesar's Palace. As Tits stopped me from walking into traffic, my grip slipped and my trusty Touch Pro let gravity take hold. Watching helplessly as the motherfucker reached terminal velocity, I got that "ohfuck" chill down my spine...you know, the one that takes hold when you see a cops lights flash on right after he passes you. It was certainly too late, though. Even had I been sober, there was nothing I could have done except accept my role as a witness to the coming events. With the force of a thousand typhoons, the motherfucker slammed into the concrete. And, without hesitation, the battery ejected itself like a god damned fighter pilot...shooting the back cover in the process. And the stylus? I don't even want to talk about the stylus. Gathering the pieces with my head held low, I tried to place them back together. I might as well have been trying to find my way into a Mayan Temple, though. As mentioned, the inebriation had taken hold and the pieces were hardly recognizable. After a couple of minutes of full concentration, the moment of truth. In my hand rested a phone. A phone with a large chipped area on the bottom right corner, a hefty gouge on the opposite shoulder, and enough tiny knicks in the screen to fill Madison Square Garden. Nonetheless, when the power button was pressed, the phone has zero hesitation. The startup screen flashed and the son of a bitch powered up. It that fall didn't destroy this phone, nothing short of deliberate malice (or maybe a little water) will. Gentlemen and Women, share with us your tales. |

Great idea for a thread! Like Orgazmo mentioned, I just got a new iPhone today. I had my old one for nearly two years. It was still working perfectly fine, but decided to send it off to pasture on a high note rather than wait for it to completely crater on me. I kind of sensed I wasn't going to get more than a few more months out of 'er.
Anyway, two memorable drops come to mind. One was my phone and one was me dropping someone else's. Someone Else's Last summer some friends met up at this Tex-Mex place for my birthday. one of the people who met up was my roommate's personal trainer, also a friend of mine but not a very close one at the time, J-Mike, this guy: ![]() I always got a little nervous around him because he's like this super cool ripped black dude that gets tons of ass so I always want to be in top form around him and so I put pressure on myself to be in top form which makes me nervous and then the whole thing just comes off as big time FAIL. Anyway, he came into the restaurant and I walked up to him trying to some cool black-guy handshake with him and instead just knocked his Blackberry out of his hands. It shattered into what seemed like a million pieces but was probably 3 or 4. I was so embarrassed and just had a 'deer in headlights' moment of not knowing what to do. Normally I think he would have gotten pretty upset, but since it was my birthday he didn't want to throw me in the flame for it, so he just played it off like no biggie, picked up the pieces and somehow the fuckin thing turned back on and worked fine once he reassembled it. Dropping My Phone This isn't as good of a story as the one above so I'll keep it short. I was walking my dog while listening to music on my iPhone. Somehow the leash got intertwined with the cord from the headphones and when my dog took off towards a squirrel or something the leash yanked on the headphone cord therein ripping my phone out of my pocket and flinging it onto the ground. Furious at my dog for this (even though it wasn't really his fault), I picked up my phone to find a pretty good sized crack on the screen. Fortunately this crack only affected about 5% of the overall screen area (bottom left corner) and wasn't enough of a deal-breaker to make me seek out a replacement. I used the phone for more than a year after that major drop incident free. |

I didn't have any phone drops that did anything devastating but I definitely dropped my first cell phone in the parking lot right outside Cingular mere minutes after buying it.

I make bad decisions.

I remember nokia's first color screen phones that were "free" with upgrading your plan or whatever. It was still pretty thick, but was an all around awesome phone. I had one for 3+ years. I constantly threw it at people, get pissed and throw it, drop kick it, you name it, after getting into an arguement with an ex, about some bs, she threw it out of her second story apartment window and it still survived.
I remember being at a campus bar one night and talking to some random whores, and one of them was bitching about how her friend just dropped her new 300 dollar phone. I start laughing and say "that's why you just get the cheap ones. They'll survive anything. Watch" We were sitting right next to a wall, and I playfully threw it at the wall from the end of the table and it explodes into several different pieces. My response was a "ughhhhhh, that doesn't happen" and that was the end of that phone's life. I was deeply saddened. |

I have only once. This phone broke due to repeated dropping over the course of two years. Eventually one of the falls onto the hardwood floor fatally wounded it. It was a slow death, though. Meaning that it worked for awhile after the damage was done, but eventually the top half (it was a flip phone) broke apart from the bottom half.
