Since January I've gone from about 1,000 friends to around 350 or so by March. I got rid of what where obvious fake account, people who didn't speak english, talked god too much, and anybody who kept asking me to be in their farm, etc. Then in the last few months, I've come to realize that I never liked about 75% of the people who I do know and just because I knew who they were in 7th grade means that I liked them or now. These people got chopped. My interest in the facebook has waned dramatically. Most of my IRL friends don't post that frequently. Some of my closest IRL friends don't even have an account. It got to the point where I check it once or twice per week. Look around and see that Laurie is still posting song lyrics, Arthur is spreading peace and hugs through the internet, John is linking every news article he sees. Over and over and over. Frankly, I really just don't give a shit about the social medium anymore. I deactivated my account today. Big fucking deal.

I've basically reached this point myself. After discovering Twitter and making my feed a good deal more interesting than the stuff I see on Facebook, I check Facebook only like once a week now. I'll probably never deactivate my account though; it's a great way to get in touch with people in that rare time when you need to. Also, bikini pictures.

I deactivated a month ago and haven't looked back. The good thing about deactivation is that you can still go contact somebody, if needed by reactivating and when you're done, deactivate again.

I deleted about 200 people the other night. If I hadn't talked to them in a year, deleted. It felt great.
I've been thinking about deactivating it lately as well. It really is a colossal waste of time that I can't really afford to/don't want to deal with at this point in my life. |

If you're going to deactivate your facebook account, you might as well delete all the pictures you have stored on there. Otherwise, facebook still owns your fucking pictures. Actually, it probably doesn't matter even if you do delete them. My point is that facebook owns your pictures.

I don't understand the point of deactivating.
If you are deactivated how can people get ahold of you? It's a two way street: sometimes you are going to have a reason to get in touch with an old friend for some reason or another, but other times it's that person that needs to get in touch with you. You don't have to use facebook for it to be a great tool of staying in touch with people when you need them. |

You're such a cunt, f3lix. My AIS professor told us this in class. He's much smarter than you are. Facebook owns your pictures and your soul.
Anything you upload to Facebook becomes the property of Facebook. It's a very simply concept. I'm not surprised, though, that someone as dumb as you are (not even smarter than Kremlin for fuck's sake) wouldn't know that. |

A company having permission to use what you upload as long as you use their service (which the depth can be controlled via your own settings) and with that contract being voided at any time the user pleases.

Having read a good article that was in non legalese that I am too lazy to find, plus it's essentially common knowledge; facebook, for all intents and purposes, maintains full control of your information even after deactivation, unless you go through an intentionally excessive process. Even then, they have it for a fair amount of time. Even going to websites that have facebook buttons basically gives you to their powers.
However: Unless you are referring to a highly respected or at least favorite post grad doctor in their field, don't start an argument with |

You are splitting hairs now and merely arguing over what I meant by "owns". The whole point of my original post was to inform people that Facebook can do whatever the fuck they want with your pictures, and they can. So while they do not, in effect, own your pictures, they have a wide berth to do what they wish while you're a member.
I wouldn't start an argument with that if it were something said to me by a graduate assistant...He's a doctor and he's Chinese. |
