Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (born March 9, 1943) is a former world chess champion, who on September 1, 1972 became the only American to win the FIDE World Chess Championship. He lost the title when he refused to defend it on April 3, 1975. Garry Kasparov wrote that of all world champions of chess, the skill gap between Fischer and his contemporaries was the largest in history [1]. Fischer is also well known for his eccentricity, unconventional behavior, and outspoken, anti-Semitic political views. Despite his prolonged absence from competitive play, or perhaps because of it, Fischer is still among the best known of all chess players.

Fischer's victory over the Soviet champion Boris Spassky to win the world championship was seen as a symbolic victory for the West that catalyzed interest in the game internationally. His opponent was portrayed, in the United States in particular, as the product of an impersonal, mechanical, and oppressive system of state control, while Fischer was the solitary genius overcoming the Soviets' claim to dominance. As a national hero, Americans were willing to forgive his scandalous behavior and views as eccentricities, and in popular culture he became a symbol of the genius whose brilliance is so great that he is destroyed by it.

This guy is fucking amazing, a real interesting figure in history. He became a chess GrandMaster(the highest ranking in chess) at the age of 15. He singly handedly shattered the Russians dominance of chess in the 60's and 70's. It is argued that he is the greatest chess player of all time, or second only to Kasparov. The guy sounds like a raving lunatic these days, I mean he may hate Jews more then Hitler did for fucks sake.

In 1992 he became a fugitive from the USA when he traveled (against the governments will) to Yugoslovia to rematch Boris Spassky (the world champion Bobby beat in 72) for the rematch of the century. He won.

In 2004 he was detained in Japan for not having a valid US pasport, and they're deciding what to do with him. At this point MOST consider him a mentally sick man. If he is shipped back to the USA he faces criminal charges punishable up to 10 years in prison (for playing a chess game!).

He claims this is superior because it emphasizes imagination and creativity instead of memorizing openings, which I agree with. He says old chess is played out. His new chess is called Fischerandom or chess 960 (because there are 960 possible starting positions). It is slowling gaining popularity.

That's interesting, nice post. I already knew about him being a fugitive in America, and detained in Japan, but I never knew that he was such a crazy fucker with such crazied views on things.

I think that the chemical inbalance in his brain that's linked to his borderline insanity is also the root of his incredible chess playing skills.
