I say fuck yeah

1. just as competitive
2. money prizes involved
3. wide following

To be continued later but give me your thoughts. WE are split on the issue here at OSU.

They consider board games like Chess and Scrabble sports, so Halo definitely counts.

It's not a sport unless you can die doing it, then it's just a game.

Completely agreed. Just because there is a huge following and money involved doesn't make it a sport. I mean the KKK has a huge following, and I'm sure that there are money incentives somewhere, and its probably possible that they compete with their local divisions. I wouldn't call them a sport. HALO is just a game, hence video game, not video sport.

I'll have to say yes video games are a sport. I suppose everyone can have their own definition of what a "sport" is, but by my estimation it qualifies. Being an avid gamer I'm a little bias. I belong to a team that plays Unreal Tournament. We are registered with a league, we play matches against other teams, have practices scheduled once or twice a week, we have our own server (home field), and we play the game with our team organized into "offense" and "defense". I'm not sure what the actual definition of "sport" is, but that sounds like it fits the bill pretty well to me.

A sport is defined in the dictionary as a physical activity engaged in for pleasure.

Now Halo fits that description to an extent. However I don't think sitting down and just moving your fingers qualifies it as a sport under definition.

Decision: Halo/video games are without a doubt NOT sports.

Fuck that. If no limit texas hold'em is considered a sport, hence it being aired on ESPN, then I say Halo can be considered a sport.

ESPN has gone away from broadcasting ONLY spots.

SPORTS
-Baseball
-Basketball
-Football
-Hockey
-Pool
-Soccer
-Track
-Golf
-Swimming
-Cycling
-Ping Pong
-Running
-Tennis
-Softball
-Wrestling
-Lacrosse
-Field Hockey

Nascar, Texas Hold'em and Halo do not fit on that list.

Rule of Thumb
if you can smoke while doing it, it's not a sport.

okay bitches here is one for the video game side

First off VOL read all the definitions not just one.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary

a : a source of diversion : RECREATION b : sexual play c (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in

A source of diversion or reacreation would clearly discribe Halo as a sport. So it more than fits the defintion my friend, you might as well call it an example.

Next you say that because it simply isnt broadcasted on ESPN that it isnt a sport. Well lets get away from the tunnel vision and look at it from this perspective.

In South Korea, how much of a sport would
American Football be? Not much of one, if at all, cause no one would compete in it. In fact the level of participation there would make it more like a hobby or a game, not a sport there. But if you want to stick soley with the definition then yes it would be one.

Next look at it from the view of good ole south Korea pertianing to video games. Video Games as a sport are probably just as big, if not bigger than sports like soccer. They have high school video game teams that compete in starcraft, have tv stations dedicated to broadcasting competitions involving video games like starcraft.

So what exactly does all this shit prove, well my friend it boils down to this. In one perspective South Korea, video games are a sport, football (american) are not. In America football is a sport a big one, while video games are much less popular, yet borderline of being considered a sport.

Who's perspective is right? Good damn question, however what you can take from it though, is that Halo can be considered a sport, just as easily as established sports arent by some. Its a manner of perspective, and therefore Halo is a sport.

I think Halo is definitely a sport, if fuckin Ping Pong is a sport than Halo is.

VOL 03-12-2004 11:49 PM

I guess this will never be solved.
