Non-profit just means that the organization doesn't operate for profit, they can still pay their employees.

The motion proposes that "atheism is the new fundamentalism", i.e., atheism has replaced religion as the new faith of the secular age, exploring the notion that modern atheism is itself guilty of the very dogma and belief in its own infallibility which it scorns in the religious community.

I'm watching "Contact" right now which was a book originally written by Carl Sagan (although i haven't read it...i would like to) and it's only proving to me and further compounding what is basically a fucking hatred for the ignorance that religion nurtures.

Edit, there's a part when Stud McConaughey says in regard to Foster saying that it's possible God never existed "I don't know if i'd want to live in a world without god" and Jodie Foster says: "How do you know you're not deluding yourself, i'd need proof?!" and Stud says "proof....did you love your father?" and Foster gets all emo and says "what...yes...very much..." and he says "Prove it."

This argument is completely fucking flawed because you can't quantify something like emotion, as it's completely subjective and you dont' really need to convince anybody whether you're feeling an emotion or not. I don't have to worry about believing in your emotions. I'm surprised they put it in the movie. Nobody tries to make everybody love their dad.

Prove that God exists ≠ Prove you love God

Prove you love God = Prove you loved your Dad

Prove that your Dad existed = Prove that God exists

I've never doubted that idiot ass religious folk "love" god, as something like love doesn't really exist anyways as something tangible, moreso a series of biochemical reaction and social norms, but i HAVE doubted whether what they "love" is real.
The last two would be a much better analogy for requiring "proof"

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about this new aggressive form of atheism, and I thought I'd share a realization I had while talking about it.

For most of us who're angry at religion it's because we grew up with it, only to later realize it's bullshit. The world unraveled as we deconstructed this belief that so much of what we believed in was false. That alone is enough to make one angry, and scared. I remember the moment I realized adults, all of this big people I had grown up with, didn't know shit. Nobody does, really. There are no definitive answers. And really, I haven't recovered from that realization, even though it was empowering. But this is short sighted.

Think about 50 years ago. 200 hundred years ago. 1000 years ago. Has there been any point in history when people could openly speak out against religion? (this is primarily focused on Christianity/Islam, but it applies to other religions too). Throughout history numerous intellectuals have been threatened, silenced, persecuted, and even put to death for questioning religion. Think of Galileo. When he said the universe is heliocentric and not geocentric the inquisition placed him under house arrest for the rest of his life. We are literally living in the only time in modern history when people can finally voice their opposition. Sadly, however, there are still limits. Polled Americans said they'd sooner vote for a homosexual for president over an atheist - that says a lot given how anti homosexual America still is. Atheism is the primary cause of the culture war in America, and it's only going to become more polarizing as time goes on. Politicians regularly bend over to show they have more undying faith than their opponents. Watch the news. It's unbelievable. When you have Bush saying God told him to invade Iraq and half the country is nodding their head in solemn understanding, you know something is wrong. Then you have the Glenn Becks and Sean Hannitys professing their appropriated conservatism and twisting the facts about what the founding fathers believed. Even Obama can't wait to go on television and talk about how much he loves God. There is no alternative for atheists - to say you're an atheist is political suicide.

Anyway, I know some people are a little put off by the Dawkin's/Hitchen's approach, but I think it's understandable, given our history.

In related news, if you haven't donated anything to Haiti yet I highly advise going through this site. After trying for days using the Red Cross website and even calling them on Skype, I wasnt able to give anything. I was processed through Paypal on here in one minute .
