Crunk Music & You

Well I've been in denial long enough. No matter what kinds of music I listen to, no matter the broad variety, the locations I hear music - whether it be my own choice or somebody else’s - I find myself enjoying the dumbest crunkest music.

Lil Jon, TI, Youngbloodz, Ying Yang Twins, basically anything from Atlanta. I can't explain it. I feel guilty for liking it, but when I'm driving around a new city, the first thing I do is tune the radio to the crunkest station I can find, crank the stereo, and race through traffic.

I shouldn't like this music, I should be saying "This music is shit." "I enjoy real hip -hop 'artists' like MF Doom or Jedi Mind Trick" But I honestly cant stand that shit. It's not rap, it's wanna-be intellectual/white kid rap. I like rap that’s about big screen TVs bitches blunts and 40s. People who knock this music more than likely are reading into it too much. Turn off your brain and get fucking crunk.

-And that's my post.

i have the same syndrome, except with bands like limp bizkit, i don't know why, I just love limping with the bizkit.

I suffer from the same addiction. When it comes to ganster "look at my cars and shit" rap, that's about where it ends for me. Sure, I'll listen to a catchy song or two by Lil Jon or Ying Yang Twins...but Big Tymers are about the only group that please me on the whole with all of their product.

I love rap, but I hate nigger rap (which apparently is known as "crunk").

DJ FC 05-18-2006 05:34 PM

Well let's not be too hasty UB. 50 Cent is nigger rap, but he certainly isn't "crunk." Crunk is a style found in the south.

I like all kinds of rap actually, I just made this post when I realized that I also like crunk music. Oh, and UB, you are in one of the hottest cities for dirty south rap music right now.

Ugly Bastard 05-18-2006 07:43 PM

I know. There's this station I listen to my car that is nothing but "H-Town" crunk. Most of it sucks, but some of it is actually quite impressive.

Niger Angelus 05-18-2006 08:38 PM

Oh, nevermind.

Personally I cannot stand to just listen to crunk music for the sole enjoyment of "crunk rap". However, I do enjoy it as background music that I don't have to focus on. For instance, if I'm at a party or driving in a full car, I really don't mind hearing it.

One thing I cannot stand is "rap purists", or people who listen to underground rap, because they hate "mainstream rap". They always praise the lyrics, rambling about how talented the artist is for making up creative lyrics that carry social/political/etc... messages. To me, such rap is fucking terrible. People claim these rappers are far more talented than 50 cent and other mainstream rappers, but if these underground cunts truly were talented, then they wouldn't be underground. No rapper wants to be poor. I guarantee every single rapper would love to have the chance to sell out (and would do so given the chance). Basically, when I listen to rap, I want to hear awesome beats and a good hook/chorus.

Personally I think HCP (3/6 mafia, project pat, frayser boy, lil wyte) have some amazing beats, and even though their lyrics are usually complete shit, I still consider them my favorite rappers. Some of their music borders on crunk style, but without quite as much repetition. Plus, DJ-Paul and Juicy J have incredible amounts of raw intensity in their voices. Really makes you want to go out and stab someone.

Couldn't say it better, PN.

Beebs 05-23-2006 08:08 PM

Exactly, 50 cent was a huge underground hit, "how to rob" was getting all sorts of praise, then he gets paid and now the purists aren't allowed to like him anymore. It works this way in all music scenes.
