I dislike Barack the most... does anybody realize how massive a change his plan is on social security tax? It's essentially raising the marginal tax rate by 15%!
Redistribution of wealth = something poor people want but also something which keeps the nation poor... it is not the prudent time to take a wrecking ball to our economy right now just because it sucks. Good god we're fucked I'm glad I'm moving. |
![]() The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them. ![]() |

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

Mccain is neither of those things, and hes always been a moderate in the republican party. but unfortunately, to win the election you have to satisfy the either of the two bases of our two party system. Thats the nature of American Politics.
Its true that most republicans are christian, but to call them all religious nut cases is a stretch. There are a lot of people I respect that are religious. The people you refer to and have personal experience with are a radical minority. edit: I don't think anyone voting for mccain on this board are warmongers let alone religious at all. |

And let me say something. The Iraq war is already happening/happened. Voting for Obama isn't going to change that. A mistake was made. Who voted for whatever back in 2001 is a moot point. The question is who is best for the country right now. The shit obama's spewing definitely isn't the answer.
Whats best for Iraq? Leaving them in shambles like we did with George Bush Sr? Leaving now without stability there will allow a horrible civil war to break out. Perhaps leading to an even crazier dictator than Saddam, leading us to have to go back there in another 15 years. The middle east is a mess with no clear solutions, and I firmly believe leaving and letting it ferment alone is the worst choice. |

Religious nut cases can be a stretch. For your average moderate Christian, sure, okay. But Orthodox christians, Evangelicals, Literalists, etc...make up a large and powerful percentage of the voting public. And even the moderate ones will still vote against stem cell research, and a lot of them are most likely proponets of intelligent design. As for war mongering, no, I don't think McCain is one. But the dude has a temper, and I think he still has a cold war mentality. But no, he's not a mongerer. What I have the biggest problem with is how everyone seems to be okay voting republican based on fiscal policies, while ignoring the cultural significance. The party, I repeat, is in bed with the Evangelicals. Voting for them will only perpetuate this whole re-christianizing America movement.

Approximately $474 billion has been spent as of 12/07. The CBO (congressional budget office) has estimated the total cost of the war in Iraq to U.S. taxpayers will be around $1.9 trillion. It is a financial black hole that is greatly contributing to bankrupting our country. This money could be much better spent on education and health care. McCain claims the surge is working, but that's because he and the Republican party keep moving the metaphorical goal post. McCain, like Bush, is stubborn and rigid when it comes to the war. He refuses to entertain alternatives, going on record as to say he's prepared to stay in Iraq for 100 years (however long it takes) to achieve "victory". The toll on the Iraq people is staggering. Civilian causalities are in the tens of thousands, health care has deteriorated to pre-1950's levels, and 35% of children in Iraq are orphans. The Iraqi prime minster recently asked us for a timetable to withdraw, but does McCain care? No. Exactly whose country is it? The entire Mid East is fucked up and hates us. If you want to say we're staying in Iraq for purely stategic reasons then fine, I can accept that reasoning. But any sort of moral high ground, or whatever, is a joke.

And Repug, caring more about spiting the religious right than your own pocket book makes believing in Jesus seem semi-rational. And as long as we're on the topic of empowering religious nutjobs, why don't you Google your boy Obama's name along with "Jeremiah Wright", "Michael Pfleger", and "Louis Farrakhan".

It's not about spiting them. I don't want their religious beliefs having an effect on my life through public policy. I respect your desire of wanting to do with your money what you want, but even you would agree that this is downside to the vote you'll be casting.
