Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

Also I should note that I don't classify Hitchens as an alcoholic, and I'm sure neither does he. His alcohol use helped to lubricate social situations and no doubt helped him write as well. He may have been dependent on alcohol to a degree, but I view alcoholism as having a negative affect on his life, whereas he has definitely stated somewhere (i'll try to find interview) that that certainly wasn't the case for him.
I highly doubt he regrets all the drinking and smoking he did -- much, anyways. |

I'm pretty sure he's openly admitted to being one. Before I grew out of my Hitchens-loving phase, I remember reading a comment of his from somewhere that indicated he gets by only because of vodka.

Possibly. Who knows, definitions are pretty subjective. But in the above article it outlines some statements that would make it seem he doesn't identify with it.
Anyways, i still like cheersin |

There is a pretty simple way to find out of he is physically addicted to alcohol, if he stopped drinking and got withdrawal symptoms, then yea; the word "alcoholic" has a different meaning to me: you can be an alcoholic without being physically addicted, and vice verse, in my opinion.

Christopher Hitchens Takes on Nietzsche: Am I Really Stronger? | Culture | Vanity Fair
This is probably the saddest Hitchens article I've read. |

No but I just finished reading Amazon.com: Letters to a Young Contrarian (Art of Mentoring) (9780465030330): Christopher Hitchens: Books
And it was fantastic. I do have Hitch 22 -- Memoir on Audiobook and I plan on starting it soon to listen to in the car. |

Meh I mean I think he was just an angry guy basically. A real prick more or less. Not saying he wasn't usually right, just that the way he went about conveying his philosophies made me want to distance myself from being influenced by him.

Almost everything Hitchens was angry about he was right to be angry about. Can't win them all, Iraq war snaffoo was a bit hit-or-miss with his switch-up, but everything else he was pretty much on the rationally righteous side.
There really aren't enough angry people whose anger comes from moral/rational/righteous concerns these days. He actually covers a lot of the criticism UB and others have said of him and other "angry young men" in Letters to a Young Contrarian -- snippets: Quote:
