Well, I'm about 2 months into my second year teaching here. Last year I taught elementary and middle...this year, for a pay increase and daytime hours (not working till 3:30PM was awesome, but living in Seoul I wanted to have evenings off) I'm working kindergarten most of the day and some elementary.
Kindergarten is kind of a huge bitch. I didn't think it would take this long getting used to. It's basically daycare for about 5 hours, far too early to deal with 5-6 year olds. There is daily crying and a kid I was hammering how to pronounce some three-letter word pissed himself in my class like 2 weeks ago. Actually, that was fucking hilarious, I didn't have to clean it up or anything so that was nice. I've been somewhat miserable but am just now figuring out how to deal with these little fuckers so it's not that bad, and all cliches aside, they are pretty god damned adorable. I take pictures of and make fun of their artwork and the retardedness of their ways often, but I haven't been able to get the pics off my cellphone yet. I'll try to keep you guys entertained with stories. Right now all I have to offer is this one kid in my class, James, who has HUGE fucking anger problems. Like, even worse than those of you who know rage mode Blonde. The kid was playing with coins today, I told him to put them in his bag, and as he was doing it he turned around and told me right to my face "I don't like you." (the kid has huge balls for being only 6 years old. Don't get excited ID, i'm talking metaphorically here). I responded with "Yeah, well, I don't care", at which point he vehemently tried to kick me in the balls and when I held him to stop him from going batshit he tried to bite my hand. Seriously, this kid is fucking nuts, but he's a work in progress. Honestly, I really do think he might have problems at home with his parents hitting him or something. He's very physically reactionary at the slightest touch (LOL PEDO JOKES). Anyways, more later. For now I'll just leave this here. |

Both of these are relatively accurate with what it's like to be in Korea. I haven't had a lot of the problems in the first video, but a LOT of people do:
Why You Shouldn't Teach English in Korea It's pretty amazing how spot on they are with the awkward foreigner who thinks they're hot shit for being here (they will literally take anybody) and the standard foreigner guy/standard korean girl interaction: Do You Like Kimchi? |

Korea can actually make fun of itself!
For context (there are tons of these kinds of videos, Koreans are fed lots of bullshit about their history/have a huge complex with not being as superior as their pure blood theory would lead them to believe) |

News: CONFIRMED: Spike Lee To Direct OLDBOY Remake
If you haven't seen this movie yet (the Korean one), I would highly recommend it. Imagine how cool you would have sounded if you would have seen Infernal Affairs before The Departed came out! ![]() |
