I have like 7 months left.
Yes, many changes have been made, although I'm not sure the actual itinerary right now. I now have somewhat of a complex into traveling abroad with celiac disease, which, as I have mentioned before, is an intestinal disorder which basically means i can't eat wheat gluten. This wasn't a problem in australia or the states, but has proven to be quite a significant annoyance in a country where I don't speak the language and the labels are only in another language. For the general populace, food I can't eat includes: wheat (most) pasta pizza cookies crackers most snack/junk food pizza burgers any other form of bread beer breaded, fried food non-breaded food fried in the same vat as breaded fried food soy sauce many other sauces/foods (mayonaisse, many commercial dressings) that use wheat or barley as a thickener and don't list it/the food preparers don't know it has gluten in it (restaurants abroad are especially guilty of this) Unfortunately, with the way things are commercially cooked in Korea, I hardly ever eat out here. They cook pretty much everything in this shit: ![]() which has gluten in it, so basically I can't eat anything unless its plain, which thanks to much of Korean people, as intelligent as they are but lacking any form of common sense/deviation from the norm or the ability to understand it (you should see me order a whiskey/water at the bar" WHAT U MEAN WATER?! WHY?!), almost never happens, so I cook pretty much everything I eat myself. It makes traveling more difficult than I thought it would be. It may not sound like a big deal, but this isn't exactly something minor like lactose intolerance; when i ingest gluten, it destroys the villi in my small intestine which helps to digest food. After eating no gluten these begin to grow back, but it makes me very tired, weak, and generally somewhat malnourished in the meanwhile, not to mention much harsher future consequences (read: intestinal cancer) So like I said, not sure. Its definitely possible to do, it just makes shit a lot harder. I should be getting my vacation in another couple months, I'd like to go to Beijing and see the great wall of China, maybe down to Shanghai too. I also plan on visiting thailand/laos/cambodia when i'm finished, but right now its up in the air. As much of a poor, reckless wanderer i'd like to be wandering on foot from city to city, country to country, with such a dietary restriction it significantly lowers my chances of doing that. |

What the hell sort of backwater are you in? I know there is pizza in Incheon. I know there are American brand pizza places in Korea, and I bet they deliver.

I've heard they have a gluten free bakery somewhere, but frankly I don't miss it enough to track it down/call/travel 45 min on a subway to eat a pizza.
I only knew of one place in Tempe that had it and I never got it there either. I guess I don't miss it that much. |

I just realized i've gone 6 months and hardly have written any hilarious anecdotes about being here, which there have been a lot of.
The other day I saw a construction worker use a veritable flamethrower to drive the pavement, 3 feet from children walking by. There is a random asian who "talks" to me who calls himself "Dr. Jones" and I run into him everywhere. He never seems to work also knows almost zero english, so i'm suspicious as to whether or not he is actually a doctor. Today on the subway, my buddy Daniel (who is Korean American from Atlanta and a pretty cool dude...also bilingual which is gold when we try to talk to korean chicks) and I were just hanging out when we saw a child beggar come down the aisle. This isn't unusual, beggars in SK and on subways/street corners are common, but what got me was that this was only about a 10 year old boy, in pretty nice/normal/clean clothing, unaccompanied by an adult. He was acting like he was mentally retarded and going up to people just shouting 'MAUUDHHH.NNAHIU" random loud jibberish that you would expect a retarded beggar to make, until he collected what I can only assume was about 3,000W (about $2.50). Then, as the subway was at a stop, he paused by the door, pulled the "emergency stop" lever which prevents the train from moving, and ran off to the parallel bus which was also stopped, at which point he was smiling and laughing about his heist he just made. We were stuck on the track for about 10 minutes before anyone figured out which emergency handle he pulled. Pretty smart little fucker if you ask me. |
