I just recently watched Punk'D on MTV. After the show they showed an AFI video?!?!

Is it just me or when classic punk bands go to MTV I kinda think they are sellouts.

It happend with blink-182 and A New Found Glory.

Does anybody else see the partial sellout?

It also helps to put an image to the music.

If you really care about the music itself, then you shouldn't give a shit whether or not a band is on tv or 15 yr old girls have their tshirt; you should be concerned with the music. Widespread exposure will help more people hear the music, and hopefully generate more profits for the band, so they can keep turning out great music...
Most people just want the band to be special to them, and the less people that know about them, there more special the band seems. People just like to feel elitist (in a reverse way).

ok AFI, well they changed record companys from Nirto to Dreamworks. because dreamworks is all big and stuff they have radio and tv bradcast there stuff, BUT nothing about AFI's music has changed there still awesome east bay hardcore.

also, alot of ppl got mad when there song "girls not grey" got played on Los Angelos radios a while back
but then some of AFI's extreme fans that have liked them for years. kindly stated the AFI has never been that "underground" they have never been on MTV before but almost everyone has herd there name. ether writen some where, or someone wareing a shirt, or actually hearing there music.

I do not think they are sell outs. They didn't change there style and they just changed record companys not to get popular, but to have more exposure to fans. I mean since they have changed labels they have toured the US, Japan, and Europe. Back last year the could only play on Warped tour for one date(in CA)

I got to seem them in Chicago, and there was nothing Popy about them. they still had the same great powerful show. and it was not tords stupid prepy people who saw them on MTV. It was to the music fans that have liked them all this time

Also, like Thrice stated, indirectly, most of this is done through the label. The band is their product to make them money. Then the band is paid. And as pliedes said, they need money to keep turning out great music. I have no doubts they do this for the music. Make a mix of their cds, new and old, and tell me where they sold out. If you cant tell a difference through the music, shut the fuck up.

actually, most bands over time that are on mtv do become sell outs... for instance "good charlotte" if you have listened to there preboyband days, their music was pretty good..
now all you hear is catchy little pop phrases with shit they didnt write.. bands change to fit an image, and thats not true music, music is supposed to be a form of art and expression..

I think we all know that. Yes it does happen, however, MTv doesnt make it happen. It is a choice the band makes.

I agree with Niger that MTV doesn't make it happen, the band does, and I agree with Getupkids that in the long run bands that go on to MTV often make that choice to sell out, but I also think that Thrice is right when he says AFI won't become a record company's bitch.

I just hate when people make the generalization that if you go onto MTV then you're selling out. As shown above, that's not true.

On a side note, I heard 'Girls not grey' on the radio on the way to school and it honestly made my morning, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I never could have had that oppurtunity had AFI and their record company not expanded like that had. So see, it's all good as long as a band stays true to themselves.

the only problem i see with bands getting bigger and stupid people starting to like them is this:

its not that we dont want more people to listen to the band, its the fact that the band is something special to us. i have been listening to afi for a few years now and im glad they're getting more exposure. however, when gay people listen to them, it makes me mad because they didnt give a shit about the band, until they got big. thats my big beef. i have been listening to bands like AFI for a long time, and people didnt want to give them the time of day or bother listening to them, because they werent that big. but now they're on mtv, and suddenly they feel the need to listen to them? thats the kind of stuff that makes me mad...oh well.

People start listening to them once their on MTV though solely because know they know about them. How many people would have ever run across an AFI cd had it not been put in their lap?... Seeing a video on MTV is often the first time they come in contact with a historically underground band.

I had heard of, but never listened to, AFI until recently. My brother was anticipating the 'Sing the Sorrow' release, and when it came out, I was able to listen to a good deal of it. I'd definately say I'm not a fan.

But I had never run across AFI until only recently in this 'Mtv era' of AFI. I'm sure there are others out there who will watch MTV, and for the first time ever, see AFI, then become fans. Just becuase they came to know the band through a commercial cesspit such as MTV, that shouldn't detract from their genuine liking of a band... pending it is genuine and not superficial.

If they've been on before then why do people think that they're now selling out? Just because people really like them? The fact that they've been on before just now goes to show that being on MTV doesn't really mean you're selling out...

I just say Girls Not Grey on MTV, I enjoyed it. The video's a beaut too.

That song was pretty damn cheery... especially coming off an album entitled "Sing the Sorrow", I'm sure it's just the singlism.

i think its cool that there on MTV but i dont like stupid preps likeing them and this is there first album to go gold and well ever since they went to dreamworks its like there getting all well known. its ok but i just cant stand preps coming up to me and being like oh you like AFI oh me too. i saw them on MTV and yeah its just annoying
