Jesus Christ folks. They got 11 Oscar nominations and won them all. Is that really necessary? If I see Peter Jackson's face one more time I may slit my throat. It's complete bullshit. I like the movies less now. Fuck them. Fuck them all. I feel like I just completely wasted my evening watching this fucking thing. I saw the same jackasses on the stage for every fucking award. GOD DAMN IT!

I hate it. I hate it. It wasn't even that great of a movie.
Easily predictable, long as fuck, and sometimes hard to understand because of all the geeky underworld hobbit psychobabble. Was it worth seeing it in the theatres? I guess...everyone else did, right? But was it worth Best Picture, I'd slice the dick off of the thought that it is. -Ugly Bastard |

Why didn't they just line up all of the LoTR people on the stage at the begining of the night and take care of them. Then they could do the shit that was contraversial, like Best Actor. Of course that would have made it a half an hour event, but at least it would have been more interesting.

Did you just say that the Lord of the Rings was predictable? Assinine. That's like saying the Titanic was predictable...duh. Everyone knows the story. It was the "Book Series of the CENTURY".
What else should have won Best Picture? "Lost in Translation"??? Personally, I'm glad they picked a movie with a PLOT to win Best Picture. I do admit, seeing the same movie win that many awards did get lame and boring. But, oh well, I guess that's good for me in that it makes me think "why the heck am I watching this in the first place". |

I personally have not seen one of those damned lord of the rings movies. You know why? Because they're for pimply-faced, lan-partying, Star trek quoting losers. If I had four hours to kill, and I wanted to watch a good movie, I'd watch "The Shawshank Redemption" twice.
Fuck the lord of the rings, fuck The Last Samurai getting totally screwed over, and fuck any movie being allowed to totally monopolize the oscars. P.S. Congratulations to Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, and Sofia Coppola. |

Why don't you guys take into account the historical significance of this movie? Peter Jackson seemlessly created an entire reality using technology invented solely for his movie. It is a fucking masterpeice of movie making. And if you any of you nay sayers knew anything at all about movies this would be blatantly obvious. As far as lost in translation goes, I thought it was a great movie (that never would have been made if Sophia Coppolas father wasn't who he was) and totally would have one had Lord of the Rings not been in the runnings.
And yes the people from Lord of the Rings were on the stage a whole hell of a lot last night but...hmmmm I wonder why that is? Could it be because they deserved to be there? Could maybe 7 years of putting everything you had into a movie have paid off? Heaven forbid they get what they deserve. |

Okay, HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT LORD OF THE RINGS DIDN'T FUCKING DESERVE ALL THOSE AWARDS??
Seriously, these movies were the definition of the word EPIC. These movies will GO DOWN IN HISTORY. For two years running at the Oscars, they have been overlooked. I mean, c'mon: A BEAUTIFUL MIND BEAT FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. That in and of itself was reason enough for Return of the King to sweep the awards tonight. NOW, it's their turn. They deserved every single award they got. Now, if Elijah Wood would have won best actor? Nope. That would have been a travesty. Because BILL MURRAY deserved it. Sean Penn did phenomonal work in Mystic River, but we've seen that Sean Penn before. WE'VE NEVER SEEN this great of a performance by Bill Murray except for in his little parts in Wes Anderson's movies. Basically, LotR needed to be recognized for three years of cinematic masterpiece. It was high time. [ March 01, 2004, 04:10 PM: Message edited by: Combat Chuck ] |

I don't believe that they should have taken all of the movies into account. Return of the King was up for the award, not Fellowship of the Ring. When The Godfather part III was up for an Oscar did they take the first two into account? No. If they would have, then it wouldn't have lost. Sure they put 6 years or whatever into these 3 movies, but only one of them was up for Best Picture, not all of them.
You keep saying that LotR deserves these awards. I agree that as a whole, they're a great movie, but as you pointed out the other two had their chance and didn't get it. I don't think that means it should be made up for by giving them everything. [ March 01, 2004, 04:45 PM: Message edited by: tonguegina ] |

I think it's awesome that Bill Murray was even nominated. I think he's one of the coolest guys in Hollywood, and for the rest of his life, no matter what happens, he will always be able to say that he was nominated for Best Actor.
When Billy Crystal looked out at him in the audience last night and said "Don't worry Bill, we still love you", I felt so bad for the guy, you could just tell by the look on his face that he wanted that award so much. He had my vote (well...Mr. Depp probably had my vote, but that's neither here nor there). -Ugly Bastard |

It's just a complete joke that any movie should win 12 awards. The Academy trivialized the importance of any other movies made in 2003. It will be known simply as the year that The Return of the King came out, and that's all.
Oh well, not like it matters what I say, since Barry "Roger Ebert" Jive and everybody else on this board are biased anyway, since we're all losers. Besides, even with 11 awards, that only makes you as good as Titanic. There's a nice comparison: A melodramatic movie about a boat sinking compared to a 3 hour debacle about a guy throwing a ring into a volcano. |

I think a large part of the reason Return of the King did so well is because this really wasn't an extremely strong year for movies. Sure we did have some good movies, but not nearly as competitive of a field in comparison to last year.

Elegy, you are a stupid sack of shit. You haven't even seen the fucking movies. Shut the fuck up. Of course Titanic was a melodramatic movie about a boat sinking, and maybe Lord of the Rings is just about a guy throwing a ring into a volcano. You could make vague references like that for any movie. Requiem for a Dream is just about a few people selling drugs. Shawshank Redemption is about some guy getting thrown in jail and trying to get out again. Fuck you.

Are you doing that?</font>[/quote]Pliedes, you know damn well that this series of books/movies has huge following of obsessive nerds. Hell, I even saw a kid dress up as Legolas at my school the day the third (mediocre) movie came out. It was pretty ridiculous, and because of that one event, I now think of that kid as a total fuckface. Hence Elegy's statement that the majority of the LOTR followers are pimple faced nerds who have run out of star war movies to go crazy over. Obviously there are normal people who enjoy the series, but that doesn't change the fact that 75% of the movie's followers are fucking nerds. Fuck this movie. Fuck it in the ass.

So I guess the 5,816 members of the academy are a bunch of pimply-faced, lan partyin', star trek quoting losers not working film professionals or experts in the field. Certainly you know more about movies than them.

my personal opinion on the whole thing is fuck yeah LOTR definetly deserved every award that it won but it kinda gives me flashbacks of the Grammy Awards a while back when Nora Jones (fuck her, god i hate her, stupid bitch) won way to damn many awards...but kudos to LOTR and kudos again 7 years have paid off

Okay its not like the matrix didnt have a bunch of hackers dressing up as Neo at any of the showings, all movies that get big like that are naturally going to have a following, more so movies that are trilogies, and are epic adventures.
Next how bout we quit the fucking stereotypes, seriously just because you see a few weird people doesnt mean that the whole fucking movie going population is that way. Dumbass. |

It wasn't so much that Return of the King was that good of a movie, it's just that it was better than the other subpar movies that came out, and thus won by default. I can handle that.
