So, awesome story, it's now been 11 business days since the TECO office in San Francisco mailed back our approved visa's, as well as passports, but we still haven't received them. Obviously we can't leave the fucking country without our passports. We're suppose to leave on Thursday - we have non refundable plane tickets - and nobody can tell us anything. At this point we might have to use rushmypassport.com to expedite new ones to use (for a cool 500 bucks), but then that becomes a problem because you can't get the type of visa we need if your passport has been issues within the last 6 months. On top of all this we stand to lose our jobs in Taiwan and be back to square 1 in terms of finding a new one. We've already moved all of our shit into storage, put in our 30 days notice, and quit our jobs in the US.
So yeah, FML. |

I mean...can we see this for what it clearly is, Repug? A god damned sign?
Your passports will get there a day late. This will leave you with 0 ties in Oregon (and Taiwan, for that matter) and a chance to hobo your way across the United States. Embrace it. You'll be a better man on the other side. |

We didn't, goddammit. You have to send in your passport with your visa application in order to get the visa (along with a bunch of other shit like bank statement and flight itinerary). We mailed our visa application in on the 24th of July and they received it the 27. With priority mail they say 2-3 business days, so we gave ourselves plenty of time.

Or just wait for the passport and fly out later. Thats what I did; I don't know how Taiwan does it, but basically I had to buy my plane ticket but was advised not to do so until I got my visa placed in my passport. that got delayed by a week, so did my trip. Once I got it, I booked the flight, flew out here, and it was reimbursed within 2 weeks.
Did your school book the flight for you or what? |

Many (if not most) work visas require a physical stamp/visa page to be glued onto a page in your passport. And as for visas being cake to get online. Are you talking about Taiwan specifically? Because for just about any country I've ever heard of, getting a work visa is HELL. | |

Blonde - We could delay our trip, only the school semester begins August 24th and training August 17th. If we can't meet those deadlines the job will go to someone else.
F3lix - The TECO office was quite clear they required our physical passports, not photocopies, in order to complete the paperwork for our visas. Gaz - Quiet, you. GWB - Yes. It looks like we're going to drive down to San Fran Wednesday morning at 3 a.m. so we can be at the passport agency there by 9 a.m. We will get new passports reissued, then march ourselves down to the visa agency and demand new visas. Hopefully all goes according to plan and we can still keep our original flight, but worst case scenario we delay it a day or two, which wouldn't be the end of the world, just cost us more money. Lastly, you're goddamn right I'm a novelist. When I give my Pulitzer acceptance speech I'll have some scathing things to say about the support of my internet friends. |

Two friends of mine had bought tickets to go to Brazil this spring to participate in Carnaval. They didn't know you needed a Visa before getting to the airport (I guess you can get visas at some airports?), and they had to drive from Las Vegas to Las Angeles to the Brazilian Consulate to get a visa. Despite them being first in line at two in the morning, they were told that it would be at least 10 days before anything would go through (probably because so many people were trying to get to Brazil for Carnaval). Unfortunately they planned their flight too close to the date of Carnaval and were not able to go.
I hope you get your passports and visas in time. |

Thanks. We've called the passport agency three times and they say people who are leaving soonest get priority, and that a lot of times you can get new passports issued on the spot (though it's a lengthy process). I'm more worried about the visa people, since we've had some problems with them already.
