Self-righteous people

One of my room mates is self-righteous. She loves to say things like "I don't talk shit behind people's backs." And then proceed to do just that.

A little bit ago, I had a some chips and salsa. The salsa was some new kind I hadn't tried before. My room mate entered the kitchen. Here is how the conversation went:

Room mate: What kind of salsa is that?
Me: "Wholly Salsa". Its not very good.
Room mate: Where did you buy it from?
Me: Jewel (grocery store chain)
Room mate: Thats why. You should have gone to Angelo's (small, family owned grocery store)
Me: They have other kinds I've liked before.
Room mate: It would have been cheaper at Angelo's.

Rrrrrrright.... family-owned grocery stores have the cheap, delicious salsa market cornered.

Then from there she just kept pushing the family owned grocery store thing on me. Even after I mentioned most of what I usually get is more expensive at Angelo's. She disagreed, and told me about another family owned grocery store I should try instead. For me, the price is usually the most important factor. For her, it is the satisfaction she gets by "sticking it to the man". She also makes a shit load more money than I do, which makes the price less important. And what does she do for a living that brings in all that money? She works at a large insurance company. So, in essence, she is "The Man".

And I'm not sure why she thinks annoying me is going to get me to change. If anything, I'll do something out of spite in hopes of hurting the family owned grocery stores. Like writing bad reviews about how the prices are high and the cashiers smell like old pussy. I'll give "The Man" a pat on the back.

Why don't you just say this shit to her face? Next time she brings it up throw the insurance company thing in her face, or just flat out tell her she's being a self-righteous cunt? Community cohesion? If she doesn't own the place where you live/no real negative consequences can come from it, I see no reason why you shouldn't argue with her.

You seem to be misinterpreting Ninja's point entirely. It seemed to me like he was saying this self righteous cunt of a roommate is trying to support local grocers instead of succumbing to the lower prices and convenience of chain grocers, in effect, giving her bragging rights to how she is "supporting local business by not giving money to EVIL CORPORATIONS" -- when in fact she works for what many would consider an evil corporation. I don't, i'm not saying that any of the above are evil corporations. I'm simply saying (actually, repeating what Ninja already said) that by her line of logic, she should easily be shut the fuck up, at least on this topic. Or at least bring her into a rational discussion of why she's so against corporate grocers.

I'm not about to start shit with her because my other room mate is her boyfriend. And after she goes and whines to him and exaggerates what happened, they will both confront me about it. Which is a pain in the ass at the very least. Also, while she doesn't own the house we live in, neither do I. And I don't think I could afford to live on my own.

Jesus fucking christ, FC, are you trolling? This whole conversation is about faux idealism. I doubt she is working in insurance because she's wanted to her entire life, it's her dream career, and she would TOTALLY be working in a local, mom and pop insurance company if it weren't for THE MAN who forced her to work at a large corporation! I'm sure she just ended up in the career she did, and fails to draw the parallel between the kind of major corporation she works for and the major corporation she seems to be against supporting with her money.

That all sounds nice and good on paper (err.. internets?), but believe me, any time I bring something up that bugs me a little bit or is stupid, I get turned into the bad guy.

I asked my room mate not to dump their leftovers or strain their noodles, etc over my side of the sink when its full of dishes because the dirty water sits in there and stinks and is a bigger mess than before. And I asked if she'd mention it to her boyfriend (my other room mate).To me, this seemed like a reasonable request. She told me "That's ridiculous. I'm not gonna talk to him about that."

Then she bitched about it to a friend on facebook and her friend changed her status message to "Hates when people make a big deal out of nothing."
