going to see hostel this afternoon
i'll let you all know how it is.
if this movie is done properly and they don't puss, out it should be really great. i'm thinking they won't take the gratuitous violence as far as they could/should and it won't be half the film it could be. the trailers and synopsis look awesome.... but very few films live up to their true potential. anyway... i'll let you know as soon as i can if it was worth "theater seeing" or not. |

Orgazmo and I (and probably a few others) are going tonight. Don't spoil anything for us in your review.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 90% (which, for those of you unfamiliar with that site, is an incredible score). |

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

I thought it was pretty damn good. To be honest, I was a little bit disappointed with the gore factor. I think they probably cut a few scenes out. Just as an example, as you see in the trailer, there's a scene where a bitch gets her toe cut off. In the movie, it shows the cutting device being placed around her toe, slowly squeezed, then it flashes away, then it shows the toe falling off. It was just small shit like that which struck me the wrong way. Had it been done "right" without pulling any punches, we would have seen the toe slowly severed in great detail. Not that I wanted to see that or anything...I mean, I'm not a really super sick fuck. Honest.
All of that said, it definitely forged its way into the frontier of mainstream movie explicit violence...and, if for no other reason that that, it definitely has my seal of approval. All of that aside, I found the movie to be very entertaining in and of itself. Funny in the beginning to exciting in the end. It ran the gamut quite well. Tits to you, Hostel. |

Hostel was just "ok". much like the movie strangeland it didn't even come close to living up to its potential. and it fell far short of what could have been a horrifically violent movie that delved into the psyche of socio/psychopathic people.
Too much time was spent on silly nosensical things and most definitely not enough spent within the walls of the "torture" chambers. The filmmaker held back way too much and turned this movie into your basic run of the mill horror flick. i was very dissapointed after watching hostel |

I gave Hostel a B.
It was definetly the most "adults only" movie I've ever seen in a theatre. That didn't stop a woman two rows in front of us from bringing her 9 year old daughter with her, which sort of ruined it a little for me. The movie was very solid though. I liked how it was done. Well acted, well cast, well directed, well written. Just a very solid horror movie that had me lying in bed thinking last night about how fucked up it was. |

thinking more about hostel.... still think it was just okay. people who go see movies like that want to see one step shy of a snuff film. i want gratuitous torture and violence for the sake of violence. don't try to make it artsy and leave what is happening up to my imagination. i want to see the chain saw ripping through the flesh and bone... blood flying everywhere. i want to hear the snap when the achilles gets cut and rolls up into the leg... i want to see the blowtorch burning the skin amking it bubble and crack. if you are going to put this shit in movies... fucking show what is going on..

I felt the same way. When we left I stared at her directly in the eyes for several seconds. Our eyes met and I just continued to stare. Eventually she looked away quite sheepishly. I wanted to tell her what a shitty mother she was so bad, but didn't want to say it with her little girl standing right there. I was hoping a stare would get the point across.

Women are clueless bitches. Logical thinking and rationality do not exist for them. They're all backstabbing cunts at the very core, regardless of how they may come across initially.

I make bad decisions.
|
I went and saw Hostel tonight and thought it was OK. It was an enjoyable film, but I don't know if I'll go out of my way to watch it again. As stated above, it could've spent more time in the torture/killing area, but I felt that the movie got the ideas across pretty well and as much as it really needed to.
I'd give it a C+ ***possible spoiler warning*** I liked the whole premise of the "elite hunting" company as the reason for everything going down the way that it did. I thought it to be an interesting idea, although not all that original (movies such as 'surviving the game' held similar ideas), but still pretty good. I just figured it was going to be the "no i prefer to use my hands" dude the whole time, didn't suspect others as well. The part that I found the roughest of the entire movie was the asian chick that had her face blowtorched, followed by the main character cutting the loose eyeball off, the goo that followed was what did it. |

Here's my review of Hostel:
At first I thought I had accidentally walked into a soft core porno instead of the correct movie. This confusion lasted for about a half hour into the movie. Gradually things began to pick up, but slowly mind you. The idea of the movie was good, but I don't think it lived up to the potential at all. There were certain things that struck me as very typical horror genre mistakes. When he's escaping from the torture place at the end of the movie, why were keys conveniently in the ignition of the escape car? I mean seriously... There were other things too, but I'm not getting paid for this review so I'm not even going to bother. I was a little surprised at some of the lack of gore as well, but I think other parts made up for it. They didn't show to tendons getting slashed, but I think when he tried to stand up, it made up for it. They didn't show the asian chick's eye getting blow torched, but they more than made up for it by showing it hanging out of the socket, and then cutting it, and then the glorious puss. That by the way, was probably my favorite scene. With as much potential as the movie had, it could have definitely done more. Too much more might have made it a little too much for the average person, and the overall idea is to make money. It was decent overall, but I definitely thought it'd be a little better. There were no traces of Tarantino to be found AT ALL. I would expect more with all the plastering of his name they did all over the credits. Perhaps had it said, "Directed by Tarantino" it might have been a little better, but even then he's not known for horror. It was scarier than the Narnia Chronicles. |
Creeping around as I please nonchalantly like any other Supreme Emperor might.

i've noticed that the quality of the films that tarantino produces are inversely proportional the quality of films that he directs.

I've said it before:
Kill Bill vol. III, Sin City 2, Grind House, and Vega Brothers And I'll say it again. Tarantino is a little bitch. Quote:
Tarantino made 1 good low-budget film (Reservoir Dogs) and one good blockbuster (Pulp Fiction). Everything else is lackluster, especially considering the fame and budget that he could have used for the Kill Bill movies. Instead he pumps out the most unimaginative crap, loads it up with blood, and slaps his name on it. I wish he'd die. Because Pulp Fiction may be my favorite movie, but Tarantino is tarnishing his reputation. | |

I also hate how he slaps his name on all of these movies left and right as "Quentin Tarantino presents" then I have all of my dumbass friends saying "yea but it's a Quentin Tarantino movie, so I doubt I'll like it" or "OOOOHH! Goodie, Quentin Tarantino has a new movie out, let's go see it!".
Listen you tools, quit being such god damn ignorant dumbasses. It's NOT a Quentin Tarantino movie. He simply had some bullshit little role producing it, so the industry slaps his name all over it to get idiots like you to go see it. It makes me sick that if I polled my friends and asked "Who made Hostel?", more of them would say "Quentin Tarantino" than "Eli Roth". Dumbasses. |
