I thought this genre deserved its own thread, and its dedicated to all of those bands out there that are entirely (or at least mostly) completely lacking vocals, and focus just on the music. Be it techno, electro, ambient (my personal favorite), strings, drum and bass, or yes, for F3lix, even orchestra. Here are some of my favorite primarily instrumental bands of all time; At the very least its going to be impossible for you fuckers to call the shit emo.
Also, while we're at it, feel free to post specific songs from artists who aren't primarily instrumental. I find that lots of times on albums I download, my favorite songs are those where there is no singing. Some bands can just really fuck things up with singing. The Album Leaf - The Album Leaf is a band comprised mostly of Jimmy LaValle who hails from San Diego. Really, really good chill out music. Very calming, and just nice. Very well done here. Explosions in the Sky - Most of you are probably familiar with this one. Strings and Percussion. Very mellow. Caspian - Another string/percussion, a little harder than EitS though. Mono - This is a band that I found out entirely from Pliedes in the Download of the Day thread. I've been trying to download their discography, unsuccessfully, but they are awesome. Props to Pliedes for this one, I'm hoping he has more to contribute to this thread. Lunar - I really don't know how to classify Lunar. They list themselves as "Intelligent Dance Music" on myspace -- I found out about it through Stumbleupon, and they really only have one album "Wall of Sound", but its pretty awesome stuff. Very 'pump-you-up' kind of music, good for exercising, escape scenes, or beating the shit out of large amounts of people simultaneously like in the motion pictures. Has some very cool beats in the songs. I highly suggest at least checking them out. RATATAT - One of my favorite instrumental bands of all time. Most of you might be familiar with them as well, but just...just awesome shit. If you click on any one of these links, it should be this one. Those are a few to get started. Enjoy, bitches. |

Blonde thank you. I will be checking out all of the music in this thread. 90% of the music I listen to has no singing. Be that no words at all (most electronic music) or words which are rapped (rap music), in which the content is less important than the sound. I listen to a lot of new music and for a minute or so I really dig it. Then some high pitched teenage voice comes in whining about women, booze, and politics, and I lose all faith in music. But the bands which can just make good music, without ruining it with awful vocals get all of my respect!

Mono is awesome. I've been listening to them for about four years now thanks to the Butcher (Pliedes' brother). They're awesome, and I think they have a new one coming out in March.
ID: nice post of YYZ. That's a great fucking song. Along those lines, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have an instrumental called Flea's Cock that's pretty cool. It's a funky/Caribbean/rock song. It was one of the B-sides for Under the Bridge. It's no YYZ, but it's good for a listen. |

I like to read to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I've also written a lot of papers to them. They may have some sparse lyrics, but their songs are often 20+ minutes long so they're unnoticed.
Along these lines, I also like to listen to Sigur Ros when I'm reading/writing. There are lyrics, but they're in a different language, so the vocal part is just like another instrument to me. I feel I should mention Autechre for Titan, even though he hasn't been around for maybe three years. One of the few electronic bands I can get into. |

"Amber" is the best LP for beginners- part electronic, part ambient. And give "Ganz Graft EP" a try if you're really into weird music. | |

I really want to listen to your guys' suggestions, but it'd be a lot likely for me to listen to them if I had a link of some sort. That being said, this song from Thrice is fucking awesome. I think I posted it in the DLotD once but it really belongs here. When it hits 1:57 in the song...holy shit. This is one of those badass songs that belongs in a badass scene in a badass movie.

The Modern Jazz Quartet - "The Last Concert"
This is a two disc set of, as you can assume, their final live show. Yes its jazz, but give it an honest try. Whether you're reading a book, cooking, or hanging out with a lady- try putting this on in the background. It's good. Really, really good. It's also perfect music to listen to in the morning right when you wake up. |

Little People- Start Shootin'
I heard this song for the first time a few months back on pandora and i fucking love it. I can completely see this being used in a film, particularly for a scene where a person is working hard at figuring something out or something. |
