Driver killed while fleeing officer
By Amanda IaconeThe Journal Gazette

A Warsaw man was killed in a car crash early Tuesday as he fled from a Churubusco police officer along U.S. 33.
Officer Adam Swinehart clocked John Khiev, 23, speeding shortly after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and tried to make a traffic stop. But Khiev didn’t stop and led Swinehart on a three-minute chase before Khiev cut his headlights going into a curve on U.S. 33, a Churubusco police report said.
Khiev’s vehicle was traveling faster than 100 mph when he entered the curve and crashed near Whitley County Road 700 North about 3:41 a.m., the report said.
The pursuit and crash remain under investigation, the report said.
It was unclear Tuesday whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Khiev’s girlfriend, Desiree Frantz, said Khiev was driving to work and had just been with the couple’s 2 1/2 -year-old daughter in Fort Wayne.
Frantz said she called Khiev about 3:20 a.m. just before the crash to check on him during his drive to work at Keystone RV in Goshen. He sounded fine on the phone, Frantz said.
He didn’t have any problems with police and wouldn’t have been drinking because Frantz keeps no alcohol in their Fort Wayne home, she said.
“I have no idea of what happened,” Frantz said from Khiev’s parents’ home in Warsaw. “I honestly have no idea.”
Khiev was an outgoing person and enjoyed spending time with his daughter and family. He especially loved cars. He worked first shift as a laminator at the Keystone plant but always talked about going to school to study computers, Frantz said.
Khiev’s parents are from Cambodia but he and his younger brother, Joseph, were born and raised in Warsaw, she said.
