I knew nothing of the controversy surrounding the end of the show, only that there was one. I still don't know specifics of why there was a controversy because I have made the effort to avoid hearing details about how the show ended since I didn't want it ruined before I finally get around to watching it.
But whether or not the show ended "FOUR FUCKING YEARS AGO" and whether or not by spoiling the show for me isn't "really spoiling anything" in your viewpoint is no excuse not to take 1 second to extend the courtesy of putting spoiler tags around your comments about the show that people who haven't seen the show might not want to be exposed to. |

Wow...you guys must live under a rock.
Well I am sorry if I ruined anything for you both. The controversy is still very much alive, that was just my take on it. The creator has remained virtually silent on his meaning, so feel free to watch the series and make your own conclusions. Do yourself a favor and start watching this show. It really is fucking amazing. |

You've had plenty of time to watch the Sopranos until now. I've been telling you to watch the Sopranos for years. Fuck you. The fact that you've wasted your time on worthless bullshit like Entourage and Weeds isn't my problem.

So admittedly, I don't watch a lot of TV by myself recently and most of the cohabitation watching has revolved around burning through Deadwood again but last night I decided to watch "just one or two" episodes of the Wire and burned through all six I had on hand, only one disc left in season one (probably one episode on it, 12 episode seasons?) and it will suck you in. I wasn't sure at first if it was any better than a typical crime drama (Law & Order or similar) but the depth they go to along with the sheer number of characters in play makes it pretty interesting.

This is probably an unnecessary post, as I'm sure most of you are aware of this show, but there haven't been many new posts so fuck it. Curb Your Enthusiasm is a great show. The latest season wasn't stellar, but the rest of the seasons are wonderful. I don't think anyone has mentioned this show yet, so here it is. Check it out, I think you'll find that it's prrrreeettty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

This show ran a few seasons in Australia with different actors (well, at least in Elijah Wood's case). Nonetheless, FX has picked it up and it looks awesome.
Basic concept: Guy takes shit-ton of sleeping pills, but doesn't die. Some time throughout his drugged-up shenanigans his neighbor shows up and wants him to watch her dog. Which is a normal little dog, to everybody but Elijah Wood. Check it out. |

So last night I finished Season Four of the Wire.
ABSOLUTE EMOTIONAL GUTSHOT. Seeing Michael and "Dookey" fall was bad enough, but seeing Randy getting beat down in the boy's home nearly brought me to tears. This season really exemplified how much all of the main characters lives have been changed by their job and how they've grown while also introducing and making you take stake in the lives of the kids. It actually makes me want to go out and volunteer, join Big Brothers Big Sisters, or get my teaching license. It even changed how I will look at "ghetto trash" that I encounter day to day and pause a moment to ponder what they've gone through. eagerly anticipating season 5. |

@DDT: Nice! Glad you're into The Wire. My favorite emotional scene from season four was when Carver was walking away after trying to help Randy and Randy kept repeating, "are you going to help me now? are you going to help me now?" So gut-wrenching and maybe my favorite scene from a series loaded with amazing ones.

That scene killed me too ... it was probably the cake to the beating's icing.

So finished Season 5 of the Wire:
Seeing Dookie becoming Bubbles in a montage of good things happening to everyone else was pretty sad ... but the real surprise joy was MICHAEL IS THE NEW FUCKING OMAR!! I was pretty bummed when Omar got taken out by that little dick nigger kid so filling his role in the community was a good fix. |

You got through season five pretty fast. It was the least rewarding season for me in the sense that you're introduced to some new characters and themes that you know will not be developed further in subsequent seasons, but there was still a lot of awesome to it. Omar had to go. He was larger than life on that show but I think the creators got it right in reminding us that, after all, he is a gangbanger with a short lift expectancy. And yea, Michael's final scene was simply awesome. It was almost like you got to feel that Omar was still alive. Bubbles, Carver, and Prez are other characters that come to mind as having evolved very nicely over the course of the show.

The Wire has changed my life. I started a month or so ago and I just finished season 3.

I mean, it continues to blow my mind how good The Wire is. Its just so perfectly what cinema should be. It's bizarre just how much ahead it is of every other TV show I've seen. How could I have found out about this earlier? Are there other gems as good as this? It was very surprising to me, I've been used to nothing but cheap crap on TV.

I couldn't watch movies for about six months after the first time I made it through The Wire. It's just so well-done and complete that even a masterpiece like The Godfather seemed really unfulfilling in the wake of watching The Wire.
I'm yet to find a show I enjoy nearly as much, though Mad Men gets wonderfully close at times. |

Major props to UB for repeatedly forcing this recommendation down our throats while we kicked and screamed in resistance. Its absolutely worth the watch for anyone that hasn't and probably worth a rewatch for anyone that has. | |
