I have had minor ulnar nerve entrapment in my right arm for almost 2 years now. I had surgery to relieve pressure on my left ulnar nerve in 2006. I have recently been to some doctors out here who did tests on it (including the terrible EMG where they do electric shocks on your nerves to test conduction) and concluded that surgery is not recommended at the moment.
Overall, this is not a big deal. I'm glad the docs don't think I need surgery. The bad news is that it is somewhat of a ticking timebomb which will probably need surgery at some point, and in the meantime, I can't workout normally -- truth be told, I haven't been able to exercise in terms of my former glory since the surgery in 2006. This is highly frustrating as the tingling in my right arm/"funny bone" feeling is a daily annoyance. I'm looking into non-surgical treatment options as it's been getting worse as of late. With my luck, it will need surgery as soon as I leave Korea where I have insurance. |

I would love to, and that was initially my plan to do before coming home/having China plans. (as an aside, it would suck traveling in China with a cast/split, but it's probably do-able)
I might try to push for it the surgery right now, but the doctor himself seemed very reluctant to pursue that particular treatment. They looked over the results of the EMG and ultrasound and said that while it's slightly inflamed, it's not suffering any damage or impending damage at the moment (even though it's annoying as hell). He works for a University hospital so he's on salary therefore not profit-motived, and all hippocratic-oathey about it -- he basically doesn't think that it needs surgery right now, and it is of his opinion that I might not ever need it. That being said, I think i'm going to schedule a follow-up appointment in a few weeks to see the likelihood of it happening in the future. Another thing he mentioned was that even with an ulnar-nerve transposition, because I am young, it could happen again in the future. However, being well-versed in the procedure, it's unlikely it is going to be entrapped after the transposition. Nerve issues are very complicated and deciding on surgery falls on a variety off issues; muscle wasting, loss of motor skills, loss of sensory skills. As of right now I only have a slightly less sensitivity but my motor skills are still pretty normal and there is no muscle wasting. If there was either of those two it would be horribly difficult and borderline painful to type right now To boot to this, I also have a small but mildly painful ganglion cyst in my right wrist i've been dealing with for a couple years too. Might see how much it costs to get that excised, or I might just man up and let a friend take a bible to it. I also broke my index finger 2 Decembers ago and that bothers me from time to time. TL;DR - I wish I could amputate my right arm above the elbow and put on a badass I, Robot arm on it. |

I went to the Dr. this past week. He took some blood, and I had to wear a Holter monitor (heart monitor) for 24 hours. The blood test came back fine, so I'm hoping the heart monitor gives some insight. If not, I'll probably be referred to a cardiologist. As I type this, my heart is beating quite powerfully and I am short of breath.

I have great health insurance.
For an update, the cardiologist said that my heart does race, but it does so normally, so it's not an arrhythmia issue. He prescribed a beta-blocker to me. The shortness of breath symptom really bothers me, so I inquired about getting a ct scan of my lungs. He said that was over-kill. He said I could get a lung cancer screening for $75 at this place. When the nurse came back in she told me the scan was to check for coronary heart disease...which isn't what the doctor and I discussed. |
