Fair trade is a great concept, although down the line it surely backfires. This is the same thing we are experiencing with China and India now. They are fully industrialized nations that completely undermine our entire manufacturing base. Keep propping up third world countries so that they have real economies and manufacturing will be undermined even further. The entire world CANNOT be 1st world nations, or even 2nd world nations for that matter. Capitalism only works if there are rich people, poor people, and some people in the middle.
