While Maine Coons are indeed badass, I recommend completely ignoring breeds. Cat "breeds" usually have health problems within each bread that requires more maintenance. And why pay the extra cash when your stupid daughter who just learned how to stop shitting herself won't know the difference?
Getting an adult cat from a shelter is a very good choice, you'll be able to interact with it and tell its disposition, and whether or not it's what you want. It's grown up and its ways are set in stone for the most part. Find a good group, look for an organization that is "No Kill" and neuters and vaccinates strays they find. the people taking care of the animals will be honest with you if you have a preference for activity level, good with children, good with other cats, etc because they want to make sure that you are a good fit for the cat and they don't want it to end up back on the street. The place I got Warren from only charged me $100 for a cat that has just been given free vet care, a clean bill of health, neutered already for you.
Getting a kitten is rolling the dice, as upbringing can only change a cat's native disposition to only a certain extent. But the upside is that kittens are hilarious and awesome.
