Almost none, because when I have extra work to do I have to stay at the fucking office all night to do it. I can't just pack it up and do pantsless with a bottle of beer in front of the TV like a teacher can.

And then, of course, there are people like my husband who work 12 hour days, 5 days a week all year round. They also don't get MONTHS of vacations over the summer. Or 2 weeks off at xmas. Or a week at spring break. That's what is known as the "real world" and most of the teachers who bitch about their jobs have never, ever experienced it.

Ahhhhhh! This is my life. Only a lot of days are 14 hours (market's open from 7am to 9pm) instead of 12. Fuck teachers.

How do you figure? I know of a few profs with only a Masters degree, with marginal experience in the field.

So, with at least a Masters and 20+ years of federal experience. Criminal Justice courses are not particularly difficult, and there is always somewhere wanting to do somewhat specialized classes.
I think it wouldn't be too hard to teach something as simple as CJC 101. I'm pretty confident I could compile a curriculum for a basic Immigration Law course at the college level now.

It's not that it's hard to teach those courses, but that tenured professorship (the kind that actually gets paid more than $10/hour) is rare and very hard to get. They only have to deal with undisciplined kids, arrogant and asshole parents, produce a unique environment for students to learn in, have the weight of knowing the future generations are in their classroom, no pay raises or benefits for being better than other teachers (no motive to achieve other than self-service), and a salary that doesn't allow them to live better than a middle-middle class life. Fuck teachers who volunteer their time to help students and coach athletics for some boozer's child who needs to be anywhere but home. Fuck the teachers who can be fired for getting a DUI, because it says they are a poor model for students and must be held to a higher standard to keep their job. Fuck all the teachers. Who needs them anyway?

They know all of this before going into the job. Dealing with kids is part of the fucking job description. The difference is that you hear sooo many teachers bitch about these things non-stop while they should've known that they would be getting into as they heard their teachers bitch about the same things for at least 16 years of their lives.

You also don't have to pay $50k to get a 4 year degree. Mine cost about $12k at a state school, after scholarships.

And yes, you do need a degree to get into most office and IT work. My job could be done by someone with no degree, but HR won't even look at your resume without one. Just like anyone who passed 4th grade can teach 3rd grade, but good luck getting hired without a degree.

And if you had ever worked as a waiter you'd know that the money you make has very, very little to do with how well you work. The biggest factor by far is how busy the restaurant is and how many tables the management lets you take at a time.

But no, only teachers are martyrs and the rest of us just sit back and get fanned by slaves with grape leaves while making a million dollars an hour to eat ice cream.

I'm not saying that teachers are the best thing in the world, and I do believe many of them suck. What I am saying is they are far better than the bottom of the food chain treatment several of you are giving them. Should teachers bitch about the money? No. Should they bitch about their career choice? No. Do they deserve respect from those who have never even TRIED to teach a class, let alone be in that position for one day? Yes.

I've had a job since I was 14. At least 20+ hours a week. And still got the scholarships. And yes, I also worked full time all through college. As far as the ancillary costs, welcome to the world.

I have also been a substitute teacher for a few years after graduation, so blow me. And while they obviously aren't the "bottom of the food chain" they are NO BETTER than any other job. They aren't the saints you're making them out to be, nor do they deserve any more respect than anyone else out there working for their living.
