This isn't the first time that I've had a notion that my life is similar to Jim Carrey's in The Truman Show. Oftentimes I'll learn some bit of knowledge...or hear a word that I'd never heard before in my life, only to go on to hear the word 3 times the next day. When this happens, I question the motive behind this action. Could coincidence actually be so incredibly strong that it can encapsulate such a huge improbability? Before the period that began yesterday @ 2:00pm and ends right now, I thought that it could be...
Basically, there's some crazy shit going on. Tuesday night I was part of a family game of Trivial Pursuit, in which I was asked a question that basically wanted me to fill in the blank: "______ ______ & the Pips" I had no clue what the answer was...so my family informed me it was Gladys Knight. Evidently this is common knowledge... Anyway, that's fine. The trickery comes into play two days later in 4th period when the teacher refers to P.I.P.'s (something in calculus, i forget what it stands for). After doing this, he makes a Gladys Knight remark...which left me with that "clearly the world is based around me and the producer of the world is just fucking around with me at this point in time" feeling. Like I said before, this was not the first time that such a thing had taken place...so I just kinda forgot about it. Now let's talk about today. First of all, it should be noted that a short story called "Araby" was assigned to be read in my English class a few days ago... Anyway, during English today, it was noted by the instructor that the scientific name for pulling out (during sex...) was Coitus Interruptus. While that's cool and all...it isn't overly odd. As I came home, I was surfing the internet, trying to find a certain CD to steal when I came upon a small band's homepage, on which they had two mp3's to download. Of the two, the first listed was entitled Coitus Interruptus. Honestly, what are the fucking chances? I had no concept of the term Coitus Interruptus prior to today...and then, in a period of under 5 hours, I was introduced to it 2 times in completely different forms and environments. With nothing to do but forget about it, I did just that and kept looking for the cd. About 3 or 4 webpages later, I came across a song entitled "Araby." Recall that I was supposed to read a short story entitled "Araby" a few days ago. Again, a term that I hadn't known of before yesterday comes back to me today... What's the moral? Basically, this story proves that the world is centered around me. You're clearly put here simply to make me think that the place that I live is "real." When things become a bit boring, those in charge throw in little things like the aforementioned just to fuck with me a little bit. Of course, now that I have publically acknowledged that I am keen to what is going on, it will stop...but I think it's worth it to let you know that I'm on to you. I'm on to all of you. Stop with the fucking games and admit it. Seriously. [This message has been edited by Orgazmo (edited December 06, 2002).] |

*Update:
Last nite, while talking to the Brazilian, I type in "cool pirate names" into google so I could come up w/something to tell her. I got a Pirate Name Generator webpage which gave me Bloody John Rackham...which is stated in the Pirate Name Generator thread. I JUST was reading a different messageboard where somebody posted a link to the very same name generator. This is getting spooky, folks... I am inclined to believe you but... this sort of thing does happen to everyone (at least that's what I want you to believe...). This has happened to me alot, and alot of my friends as well... so in conclusion, it's obvious that the world is actually centered around me.

oddly enough, I was engaged in a rousing game of trivial pursuit not too long ago as well... a game that I won convincingly. anywho, during that game a question came up asking what movie was based on the book "the sentinel" by arthur c. clark, what is odd is that same question was on the howard stern show that same night... it was the final jeopardy question for one of his skits. I really impressed the people I was watching it with by answering correctly when even robin couldn't get it, but it's still creepy.
orgz, if you haven't yet, you should read 'the celestine prophecy' by james redfield, it talks about odd coincidences much like the ones being discussed here and attempts to explain them. the answer to the question is '2001: a space odyssy' if anyone cares. Yeah, I saw that Howard Stern and knew that one of the questions was familiar...but forgot which.
And I was reading a different board in a thread called "coincidences" which related the Celestine Prophecy to these random little things. I may look into that...of course, I hate reading and am currently being forced to read a book that centers itself around a random day in an upper class British woman's life...but I may look into that sometime. And to Titan, yes, I just kidna figured that this type of thing happened to other people and, instead of it really being coincidental, I just noticed the things more since I had recently been introduced to them. It is all completely different this time, though. Not only the quantity that they are showing up lately, but the material that it is. Coitus Interruptus is something that I think I would have remembered if I had ever run into it before...and yet I found it 2 times in 5 hours in completely different settings. That's just crazy... |

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Orgazmo:

I have this exact same thing happen to me from time to time. And I know what you mean about the whole Truman Show thingy. From the first time I saw that movie, I have been watching things in my life, and sometimes I question myself as to whether that is even possible. And sometimes I think it is. But here is my contention: We are not just actors in Orgazmo's life. There is not just ONE person on the planet for whom we are all here. I think that it is possible that everything we see in life is because we want it to be there. Orgazmo posted this message because I wanted it to be there. And maybe Orgazmo is there, because I want him to be there. And in turn, Orgazmo's life contains people in it that he wants to be here. From my standpoint, this may not be his life. He may lead an entirely different life. A life that I have no clue about, because the only Orgazmo I know is the Orgazmo that I have created in my own mind. But, that's enough deep-psycological shit for now. Go 'Canes. -Ugly Bastard |

Or, you could consider that all these things are simply just common day events, and they only strike you as unusual and coincidental because you are trying to find odd things. Every day we are exposed to a variety of small things, that we aren't usually aware of how they adhere to our minds until they are presented again. While the odds are against the finding of a song called Coitus Interuptus at any given time are quite rare, the chances that you will find a MP3 that restates a phrase or idea that you have been presented within a few days is quite high.
Here's another explanation. On September 11th of this year, the 3 digit lotto in NY was 9-1-1. It is true that the odds of this given event occuring is very slim, but that is besides the point. Every day, all sorts of numbers, statistics, and other information is created, and the odds are very likely that on September 11th, at least one of these sources would somehow produce the numbers 9-1-1. Whatever that source was, in this case, the 3 digit lotto, would be the one that would get all the media attention as the freaky coincidence. Or something like that, hell, what do I know... damn I could use a nice sandwich right about now. |

not to mention that statistically, and completely reallistically, the chances of drawing 9-1-1 on 9/11 are just as good drawing a 8-1-2 or 3-4-5, the odds don't change because the date is significant. it is also equally likely that you get a 3-1-2 on 3/12 as it is to get a 9-1-1 on 9/11, the only reason the prob. seems more drastic is because of the special significance, but let me tell you something, mr. probability and lady luck don't give a shit, the only thing that makes that occasion rare was that it was in that year, but think of how many years the lotto has been around and will be around, there is plenty of chance and always will be to get a 4-2-3 on 4/23 and have a special occurance of a bunch of cows farting at the same time and blowing up.
well... maybe not the cow part... and... come to think of it... i don' t know why the fact that they are all farting at once would cause them to blow up... ah well. |

Alright, fuck logic, this is it. I just downloaded the New Found Glory cd and I'm going through to rename all of them so that they're in my Artist - Title.mp3 format...not really paying attention to what they're actually named (just kinda typing subconsciously, correcting capitalization, that type of shit). All the while, I'm listening to the news in the background. On the news, the guy starts talking about an AIDS vaccine that they had tested on animals or something and it looked like it was golden but now it doesn't look like it's going to do too well in humans, "But researchers say that they're not going to give up."
Just as he said that, I looked at the song that I was typing in and the words that were coming from my fingers were "Never Give Up." Honestly...what the fuck!? |

I just had one of those coincidences happen to me a few minutes ago.
I recently finished reading a phenomonal book, Good Omens, but there was one recurring joke in the book that went right over my head. I then went to another message board that I frequent where I moderate an 'Literature and Art' forum to see if anyone had understood the joke, knowing that there were people in that forum that had read the book before. Well, much to my suprise, there was already a topic on the same subject that I was just going to make. Kinda freaked me out. |
