Obama Thinks Too Much of Himself (And everybody else does too)

CNN) -- To kick off the inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama is following the train route Saturday that his political hero Abraham Lincoln took to assume his presidency.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/PO....grab1.cnn.jpg
President-elect Barack Obama speaks Saturday at a town hall meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before departing.

The 137-mile journey from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Washington, D.C., retraces the train route taken by Lincoln in 1861.

Obama is planning to stop in Wilmington, Delaware; and Baltimore, Maryland, along the way to Washington, where he will take the oath of office Tuesday.

The train will slow down as it passes through Claymont, Delaware, and Edgewood, Maryland, for what's called a "slow roll," so that Obama can wave at residents who gather near the tracks.

Before boarding the train, Obama attended a town hall meeting in Philadelphia, where he implored Americans to commit to a new declaration of independence -- from ideology and bigotry -- as he acknowledged the nation faces severe challenges.

"Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast," he said from the city's 30th Street Station.

An economy that is faltering. Two wars, one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil.

"And yet while our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not," he said. "What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed."

Security for Obama's train ride will be tight. Law enforcement officers from 40 jurisdictions will provide protection from the ground. The U.S. Coast Guard will be stationed at points on waterways along the route as well.

The Federal Aviation Administration is establishing "moving" flight restrictions that will prevent private pilots, news helicopters, balloonists and others from getting anywhere near the train. FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto said flights will be restricted from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in Philadelphia, and those restrictions will move with the train.

Can somebody explain to me the difference between ideology (bad) and idealism (good)?

Mr. Blonde 01-17-2009 12:39 PM

Ideology:
1. the body of doctrine, myth, belief, etc., that guides an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group.
2. such a body of doctrine, myth, etc., with reference to some political and social plan, as that of fascism, along with the devices for putting it into operation.

Idealism:
1. the cherishing or pursuit of high or noble principles, purposes, goals, etc.
2. the practice of idealizing.
3. something idealized; an ideal representation.

Maybe he meant to say "current" ideology or something. I don't know, the guys a great speaker, but he's bound to make a mistake or two. I hardly think George W. Bush should be one to be criticiSing speeches.

I like this:

Sounds like a great time to rob cities who have their finest protecting The Chosen One instead of their own people.

TwoBlackEyes 01-17-2009 03:04 PM

Uh, he's coming from the same place as Lincoln, going to the same place as Lincoln. It's no surprise that he's taking the same route. It's not like train tracks have moved around a bunch since those days.

And if y'all think that people won't be lining the tracks anyway, you're insane. It's kinda a nice touch that he's actually slowing down to talk to them.

After 8 years of a president who refused to be accountable for anything, it's nice to have one that might actually talk to the people.

You can now go back to wailing and gnashing your teeth.

Any amount of money is worth the alternative of Obama being assassinated at his inauguration. Can you even imagine the rioting that would occur nation wide if it happened? I've heard enough conspiracy theories regarding OJ and he just stabbed a couple people, listening to blacks talk about "the man" allowing him to get shot for the rest of my life would be a catastrophic rift that would set this country back fifty years.

If Obama survives his presidency I think that says a lot about the skill of our secret service and how far we've come as a nation racially. Unfortunately, I'd imagine that there are a lot of hateful, motivated people. Can you expect to stop skinheads with so much hate and determination? We'll just have to wait and find out...

In a nutshell:

Idealism, for instance, could say that hopefully someday we will all masters of our own destinies and we will be able to rely on personal responsibility to get people through the hard times because if you just work hard enough, anything is possible.

Ideology states that there should be no safety nets because people are the masters of their own destinies and should just work harder to get through the bad times.

Idealism is hope for a better tomorrow. Ideology states there is one way to that better tomorrow and that is the ONLY WAY and everyone else is WRONG.

Are you really that afraid of black people?

As I stated in another forum, I would surely hope a country smart enough to ignore race (as a whole) would not be dumb enough to attempt something that would set us back 40 years.

Ugly Bastard 01-18-2009 03:41 PM

You don't need a whole country to assassinate someone; just one bad little kitten.

f3lix 01-18-2009 04:19 PM

It would be a horrible thing for our country.

THEINCREDIBLEdork 01-18-2009 04:38 PM

If Obama got killed he would resurrect in 3 days.

THEINCREDIBLEdork 01-18-2009 05:11 PM

I wouldn't mind having another holiday...

SittinOnDubsWGW 01-18-2009 05:36 PM

LOL, holidays rule. Especially working them and making extra $$$.

f3lix 01-18-2009 07:31 PM

Without a doubt, Obama will get a national holiday.

Mr. Blonde 01-18-2009 09:17 PM

You really think so? I mean if he gets assasinated maybe, but what would we call it? First black president day? I bet they call it something like "hope day" or "the day of change" or something..bahhah

f3lix 01-18-2009 09:19 PM

Barack Obama Day. Easy enough. To honor overcoming as a minority to achieve the Presidency of the United States. It will happen within 3 years of his exiting the Presidency.

THEINCREDIBLEdork 01-22-2009 07:18 PM

Nice PR move by Obama today, eliminating Guantanamo bay, too bad hes just going to pen up those fuckers somewhere else.

Fine to pen them up, but I believe he intends to actually charge them and try them for real crimes first. That's kinda the point. Habeus corpus and all.

Except for the 20 or so that can't be tried due to "top secret" evidence needing to be used to try them.

Your tinfoil hat is on crooked.

That's a Bush stunt there. He's not president anymore.
