Ok, those nightmarish creatures are known as
Goliath Spiders apparently. The websites I have found say they are the largest spiders in the world (God, I hope so) but it says they are indigenous to the Rain Forest (not Iraq). It also says they the world record one had a leg span of 11 inches, but those two look much larger. So, I really don't know I guess.
The best hypothesis that I can come up with is that they were mutant Goliath spiders on vacation.
