Explain to them that your change to his comment "I'm not republican, I'm gay" wasn't at all meant as a comment about his sexuality. It was political satire. Dig up a statistic on homosexual's political leanings. Gay people vote overwhelmingly (and i do mean overwhelmingly) democratic. When you wrote that it was shedding light on that fact.
