I've read nothing online, just saw the movie twice and this is my interpretation. I don't think the same guy that "spawned us" is the same one depicted in the cave drawings, which occurred in different centuries according to the film. I picture it more as a science experiment that took their DNA coupled with whatever was in the little bowl at the beginning and it essentially worked out to make man EVENTUALLY. They visited this fledgling species that turned out to be the same genetic makeup as them (pinnacle of evolution) and invited them to their planet of operation (LV-426?). This is faction A.
Faction B didn't like that shit. Their genetic makeup should not be dilluted or used for other whatever blah blah blah Prometheus stealing power from the gods metaphor ... so they go to Faction A's home base planet and say "what the fuck are you guys doing? Oh I see where you guys have been performing your little experiments. We're going to kill you then kill them! Ooops I spilled some of this shit! Oh fuck we're all dead!"
