y'know, it's really cool and everything that it's possible that, in the future, rat brains could fly airplanes (we should write a song,)... but i don't think i could EVER step foot on a plane that didn't have a human pilot. never. EVER. nope. not gonna do it.

Yeah, I mean humans fuck up alot, but I would trust one of them more than a computer that crashes, and leaves me on something like that or kills me.

Same thing applies with what FC says, though. Systems on airplanes can still crash even with a human pilot, and there would be nothing they can do.

yes, i realize all of this. it's just the idea of completely being in the hands of a computer. it isn't as comforting, to me anyway. i understand what you and FC are saying.. i'm just a paranoid little fuck.

i think you are "in the hands" of a computer a lot more times than you realize

Even though the pilot controls the direction of a plane, computers are controlling the motors, and while im not a mechanic, id bet that there is some sort of computer-controlled fuel mechanism (a-la fuel injection) that is the only thing between life and death at times.

When you are in your car, and it's icy and you begin to slide, your ABS controller (a computer) controls your breaks and may save your life.

Ever think about what coordinates red lights and green lights? Well it's not a person flipping a switch. Imagine the chaos and havoc if all 4 lights were green at the same time. I would imagine that more than half of the time serious and/or fatal accidents would occur, but you don't worry about it, because it's controled by something more reliable than a human being, a computer.

Eventually computers will become redundant, reliable, and damn near organic enough that they will be able to replace even more tasks, because they will be able to do them safer, and more reliably than humans.

until i hack the satellites and kill you all ha ha ha, ahem, in our life time anything is possible. Our technology doubles every 18 months and if were at the point of rat brains flying simulators think were we'll be in 20 years. the only limitations on computers controlling our enviroment is how accepting we are of it. And as an IT major, i trust computers as far as i can throw them. But as DJ FC pointed out, sometimes we don't have a choice.
