NFL Coaches

[VOL]

There is a lot to talk about with the NFL coaching situations. Especially in the NFC East, which consists of Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York Giants.

1) Joe Gibbs -he returns to the Washington Redskins after winning three Super Bowls there in the 80s. He is considered one of the most elite coaches in the NFL. He is now a ripe 60 some odd years old. Can a 60 year old win a Super Bowl? Nobody thought Dick Vermeil (Kansas City Chiefs) would be able to make a playoff run. This is a truly good addition to the D.C. area. Now can he get along with Daniel Snyder, Washington's impatient owner?

2) Tom Coughlin- The first coach in Jacksonville Jaguar History. Led them to the AFC championship game and led them to the playoffs in consecutive years, but no Super Bowl. He is back after one year off. Can he bring the New York Giants back to prominence in the toughest coaching city in the world? Or will he fall apart like Jim Fassell , just faster?

3)Andy Reid- He is the coach of The Philadelphia Eagles, the veteran coach in this conference. He has led the Eagles to the playoffs in many of his years as the coach. Will he ever get to a Super Bowl?

4) Bill Parcells- "The Tuna". Three Super Bowl appearances, one ring. Now coaching the Dallas Cowboys. Will he be able to take the Cowboys back to the BIG GAME?

The main points are laid out here. All of these coaches are great in their own right. All have a winning percentage above 500. They also have more playoff appearances than any of the veteran coaches around the league. Along with the questions displayed withing the given paragraphs, is it possible that the NFC representative for the Super Bowl in the next season will come from the NFC East?

Nnnnnnno, I don't think it's going to happen for a few years. The only team that could come close would probably be the Philadelphia Eagles, but I don't think that they even will.

As far as the best coaches go, I'd have to say Mike Holmgren (Seahawks), Tony Dungy (Colts), Bill Belichick (Patriots), and Dick Vermeil (Chiefs) are the top coaches in football right now. These guys know their shit, and they have proven it more than once throughout the years. This year was no exception. These guys have the Midas touch when it comes to putting together winning seasons.

I have to just add one more coach in there. Even though I am not a fan of his team, Jeff Fisher of the Titans is one of the best. He has to be in that list somewhere.

I'd have to disagree.

Dungy is a breed of coach that is too passive to ever build a dynasty. In my opinion, in order to be considered a "great" coach, you must at least have the ability to build a dynasty in the NFL. Lombardi was a great coach, Landry was a great coach, Seifert was a great coach, Shula was a great coach...Dungy is a good coach who will have some success with NFL teams, but only until that team realizes he's a pushover.

You can't have a coach in the NFL who is as passive, calm, and non-confrontational as Tony Dungy, and expect to win championship after championship with him. One championship? You bet your ass. But just watch, if the Colts win the Super Bowl this year, Dungy won't be able to keep his players' attention next year, Dungy won't be able to convince them that they have anything left to accomplish, and after a year or two, they'll stop playing for him.

Dungy is a lot like Dick Jauron or Dick Vermill. All three of those men are quiet, passive, gentlemanly coaches who are capable of having one or two great seasons with an NFL team, before their players crap out on them. Coaches can instill two things into their players: Fear, and respect. After a while Respect goes away, after a while, Fear turns into respect. If I'm building an NFL team, I'd much rather have a coach who instills fear in his players, those are the kind of coaches that can last for a long time in this league (Gruden, Holmgren, Billick, Tice, Fisher, Cowher, Reid). Those other guys without a cock between their legs (Vermill, Dungy, Jauron, Morningweig) won't have more than a couple decent seasons before their team stops playing for them.

I agree with UB that Tony is def. not the best coach. I don't think he should have even been picked as the head coach to begin with, he doesn't really have enough experience. But I disagree with the fact that if they win this year they won't be able to win next year, I think it's very possible for them to win two in a row. Especially if they pick up some big guys on defense...I heard rumors awhile back that they might try and pick up Warren Sapp next year, anyone else heard anything more on this?

I have not. Yes Warren Sapp is an average player. His mouth is uncalled for, as well as his actions. I believe the Colts do not need Warren Sapp. They need to stick with their superstars who don't yearn for the spotlight, but get it because they are good. Example: Manning and Harrison

Well VOL, I never said that they needed Warren Sapp, I just said that I heard rumors that they might pick him up. Warren Sapp might be a hot dog, but there's no doubt in my mind that he would give a positive boost to the Colts' defense, especially when defending against run plays...which they suck dick at defending.

I will bet anyone, anything; that the Indianapolis Colts will not get as far next year as they have this year. (in other words: their season will end before the AFC Championship game). Just watch...

I say no playoffs. The Titans will probably win the south and Denver and The Cincinnati will take care of the wild card slots.

I think it depends on who returns next year. I hear Manning's contract is up, and Harrison and James in a year or two, so to fit everyone in the salery cap...well, it could be tight.

However, assuming that it's the same basic team next year with some minor people missing...they'll definitely make the playoffs and it is ignorant of you to say otherwise VOL. I don't know that they'll be better or worse next year. You really can't say until you find out what the team looks like.

True. Very True my friend. What I think will happen is that next year they will stick a franchise tag on Manning, and Marvin will also get one in two years or so. James will most likely be traded due to salry cap issues or released. He will not get a franchise tag.

That's what I'm thinking. They obviously don't want to let either of them leave. I'm sure they'd love to keep James, too, but since his injury he has not been nearly as impressive. He is improving, though. With some work, I actually like the backups that they have in the running back spot, Williams and especially Rhodes. When James was injured Rhodes really impressed me. Who knows. I guess we'll see here in the coming years. I just hope James doesn't become another Faulk and become twice as amazing as he was when he was a Colt.

What about the possibility of Harrison calling it quits soon? Even before they could franchise him. Now a days 9 years is an awful long time in the NFL.

That is a possibility...then again, I don't see it happening. He's always been able to get it done, but he appears to be at the top of his game right now. If I were him I wouldn't. I don't really see him doing it, but it could happen.

Now that I think about it tongue, even if he did retire. The Colts would still be well off. No doubt Marvin Harrison has had a major impact on the other young recievers. As much as it pains me to say it, there is a monsterous professional football team building in the Circle City of Indianapolis.

I also think that they should get a rennovation to the RCA Dome, but not a new stadium like some want. They deserve more seating. The Dome is a Colts staple, so they should never tear it down. Just rennovate! And keep the artificial turf!

Manning will be in a Colts uniform for at least the next 5-8 years. He might pull a Montana late in his career and go somewhere else...but by then, he'll be worthless anyway.

9 years is a good deal of time for a running back, but not really a wide receiver...especially someone who is hardly ever injured (Marvin Harrison).

Harrison's not going anywhere, he'll probably play for 15+ years like Rice and Brown and those guys.

Who knows about James...but I really don't see the Colts losing either Manning or Harrison for the next 5 years at the minimum.

Let's just say it's a good decade to be a Colts fan, because at least from a standpoint of "roster", they're going to be pretty powerful for the next several years.

That's not a horrible idea. They do have the smallest stadium in the NFL, but did anyone else hear how loud it was against Denver? I don't know how they'd add seats there, but I'm all for giving them more seating.

Do they really have the smallest stadium in the NFL? I didn't think the Hoosier Dome was that small. Is there a site with the specs for all the teams?

Take out the south entrance and build on the tops. Add a few levels. I'm not a Colts fan, but anything to keep them. Los Angeles doesn't deserve a football team. They weren't good enough for the Rams or Raiders. You know you're a bad city when the Raiders walk out on you.

The RCA Dome is the smallest in the NFL. They've been complaining about it for a few years now, and I've heard some of the Colts front office talk about moving to a different city. In a city council meating either today or tomorrow, they are addressing building a new stadium. Someone who watches the local news neads to let us know how that turns out.

I'm sure that will be a story in Muncie as well as Indianapolis tongue. We all know about the great television that comes from the city of Muncie anyway. You should be able to break the news to all of Nubblies.

Obviously it is you who doesn't watch Spertscenter or anything. You don't know history at all either. So what if they are in the AFC championship game, If I'm not mistaken the Raiders and Bucs were in the Super Bowl last year and didn't even come close to the playoffs this year. And the worst conference is the AFC North (Bengals, Browns, Ravens, and Steelers). I'm going to say this again, base your arguments on fact, not because you are a fan.
