Let me tell you about ICONIC Entertainment.

Well, I got kind of inspired to do this by Repug telling us all the cool shit he was doing with EA. I always find it interesting to find out what people are getting into after knowing them for a while. A lot of us, if not all of us, have graduated by now (or in cases like Repug, still doing career-conducive shit while still in school), so I think everybody should make a thread or something telling everyone what they are doing with their lives.


Okay, so, I was going through a rough patch for a while out here in Phoenix about 3-4 months ago, a big part of why was because everyone and their mom was telling me not to go into nightlife for a career for all these reasons, and I started listening to them, like an idiot, but it's the only thing I can see myself doing. I can't believe I almost took a career sales job. Since getting my head back on straight, due primarily to me going out practically every night of the week (for a LONG time completely by myself) to network, I've come a long way. I think last time I posted about what was going on out here I was still doing security in the nightclub, and that's about it. Since then I have moved up to barback/bartending in the club (unfortunately more of the former than the latter, but whatever). Through networking and going out and making really good friends with a certain owner of a small entertainment company out here, also with the help of knowing a lot of people because I go out so damn much, I was hired on as a promoter about 2 months ago. I also work an extremely easy, lax, dayjob to make ends meet for the time being, which I feel kinda bad about because I spend half the day fucking around on the internet or doing shit with my night job.

ICONIC Entertainment is a small promotions company and also does marketing and consulting, which Jon (the owner) does mostly himself. Thing about him is is that he's only like...24 years old, and around the town of Phoenix, the name ICONIC is fucking huge. I don't put too many people on pedestals, ever, but the guy is a fucking marketing genius, and way wise beyond his years. I mean before i found out his age i thought he was at LEAST 28+, but whatever. Before I worked there I had NO idea that it was pretty much...just him. And the company has been around for about 2 years. The way I met him was because they were promoting Wednesdays at Myst (the club I work at) for practically that whole two years with a badass ladies night. About a month ago they left doing Myst on Wednesdays.

Anyways, point is, the company is getting too big for him to handle. When I came in for my interview with him I told him what I want to get into at this point in my life is Event Coordinating. I've always been good at getting shit together, and while promoting is nice and all and I can definitely do it well, It's not really my thing to stay with for a LONG time.

Anyways, we threw an event at a place called Barcelona in North Scottsdale, which is about 15 minutes north of the normal club scene, for ICONIC'S two-year anniversary on Thursday night. The one concern was that because it was so far away from the normal scene, people wouldn't be coming up there, but the brand name is so well known around Old Town Scottsdale, that it really wasn't that big of an issue. I took all day off Thursday and Friday from my dayjob to help with setting up the event....It was French-Themed, with a burlesque show, mimes, their hot-ass cocktail waitresses in VERY short french maid outfits, 4 free drinks when you come in plus $3 french martinis and Grey Goose cocktails, $2 Heinekens...and if you were in the 100-person VIP area you got free drinks all night. We also had 3 celebrity DJ's in, DJ Stonerokk, DJ Cheapshot, and DJ Sean Perry. Also the restaurant's resident band, Envy, (who was on Leno) once, was playing in the main room/dance floor. It was fucking amazing. Here is how it went.

This was a faux-cake made for us by apparently a faux-cake designing company (maybe they make real cakes and just like putting up models at events, idk) but it was pretty sick, and had a battery powered light inside that spun around and made it look like there was a party going on inside. It was pretty cool.

Overall, the event was ridiculously successful. Everybody got what they wanted....the staff earned a shit ton of money, the sponsors (Grey Goose, Barcardi, Heineken, Voss, and a bunch of local businesses) got their names out there, the Venue is now MUCH more appealing to a younger crowd, and we threw a kick-ass event. This is one of many more to come.

Anyways, I met with Jon yesterday because I had to take care of a bunch of post-event shit and dropped off a DJ mixer we used at his place after I was done with all that, and we sat down and talked business for a bit. Basically, ICONIC is getting bigger and he wants to do a LOT more with the company. The next step is to hire an on-site graphic designer because our artwork is costing is a shit-ton, but after that, Event Coordinator is in the workings. He was impressed with how I handled my [relatively small] part in the event, and although I still have a SHIT ton to learn, he's going to start letting me dip my feet into the Events section of the company, and if i do well, i'll eventually spearhead the department.

I'm pretty happy about all of this. I think I worked really hard in the past 8 months to get here, and definitely calculated and manipulated my way the best I could to get to where I could inside the company. That being said, people work hard every day and things don't always necessarily end up how they want. I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky to be presented with this opportunity at 23 and can't wait to see where it will take me in the next couple of years. I'm going to take full advantage of it and not fuck it up, so maybe our family line can break out of being farmers and teachers, haha.


So that's that. We'll see how it goes I guess, the thing I like most about working for this company is that it's small and everything is very informal. Pay, scheduling, meetings, all pretty much organized on the spot. I hate corporate bureaucracy bullshit and always have. So i'm happy to be part of a company where i don't ( at least for now) have to deal with that bullshit.
