Your anger is misplaced. Bookstores only do what the professors tell them to do. Yes, bookstores make a pretty penny on used books, b/c that is their business; however, when your professor elects to use a newer edition instead, they are at fault for your anger.
A reason professors do this is to support each other. Most universities require their staff to be published once or twice each year; new editions of textbooks count as this. Especially when a prof has you buy their book for their class, they are making an assload on you.
That's the system for you.
