Jon Stewart hides behind whichever character allows him to take the easy way out. When he goes serious political, and somebody challenges him, he goes "oh I'm just a comedy show guy." When somebody laughs him off he gets morally outraged because he is "the voice of a generation."
He has no backbone, and won't ever allow anyone to make a point on the same level as him, because he just goes to the opposite character.
