I had the same apprehensions you do (such as him merely being a product of his culture); he addressed them in his book, and I accepted his answers as both honest and logical. And trust me, there's very little appeal to emotion in this book in regards to winning his audience over. What wins you over is the science and its implications.
Give the book a read. Even if you don't come to the same conclusions it's an amazing personal story and a fascinating journey through cutting edge science and spirituality.
