The wife killing him was the consensus conclusion on boxing boards when it happened, and I believed it because.......well it's Brazil, but as more time went by it became pretty clear he killed himself. I forget the exact things that changed most peoples mind, but something about the way the marks from the purse were positioned. Also, he wasn't just a boxer, he was a boxer known for his power and toughness, he would have had to have basically helped her do it.
