I know this guy really well. He's not actually a trader, he works in our backoffice. But I used to work with him on a daily basis and have drank with him on several occasions. He aparently tried to set our NYC office on fire!

Holy fuck! Like this guy's life is over. They're going to be bringing up the t-word in charges against this kid. Wow... unbelievable that you know him. We're y'all friendly and stuff? Is this surprising to you at all?

Yeah, I knew him really well and he lived in the same neighborhood. We might be facebook friends, I'm not sure. It wouldn't be weird to see him show up at a party, everybody loves this guy.
He was super wasted. I think we can all imagine how in our worst moments we might have tried to light a small fire to escape an elevator when we were beyond trashed... so from this perspective it doesn't surprize me that he did it. |

I'm curious, GWB, from that article they make your friend sound like an idiot, which he obviously is not. Even drunk off their ass or hungover, people sober up REAL quick when they know/think they're in trouble. Why do you think he's talking/acting like he is? Some sort of legal plan? | |

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

Disagree with them making him sound like an idiot, or disagree with me saying he's obviously not?

Well, I suppose he very well could be, I just have this nasty tendency to associate people who make lots of money in field like this = really smart. You are correct though, there is booksmart/common sense.

I think people, in general, have much less varying degrees of "smartness" than we all like to think. Like I think you can put people into basically three intelligence categories: you've got the bottom 20% that truly are just stupid; the middle 78% that almost all of us fit into, no one of us is so significantly smarter than the other than they could never hope to reach that person's level, and then there's the top 2% that truly are at an unreachable level of intelligence. It's the latter group that is mostly responsible for steering the direction of the world as we know it.

Don't get me wrong this guy is a little crazy and on the wild side.
Also not a genius, started off as a runner getting traders lunch and things but was good enough at that that he was offered an office job. |
