Get a government job. I've enjoyed full pay while touring China, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Also, without really making much effort to get the time off approved. It's almost like they just don't give a shit AT ALL.

That's what i'm seriously considering. It'd be somewhat within my degree at least, and I'd really like government benefits, at least for the time being. What job did you have while getting to travel? Ideally that's what I'd like right now, as i'm pretty much giving up on the nightlife thing for the time being.

You have any job whatsoever. It's not that they pay you to go to those places, it's that you get a shitload of paid time off. Every month I get 8 hours of sick time and 10 hours of vacation time. If you do the math, that's just shy of 5 1/2 weeks off. On top of that add 13 state holidays I don't work, and you're up to slightly less than 7 1/2 weeks. You can also add the one or two free days they give you for shit, that I'm not even sure why we get. All that is paid time off. Then there are the multiple occasions where you take two hour lunches, leave a few hours early, come in a few hours late, etc. that no one seems to notice at all.
It's easy shit dude, and with a degree you can pretty much start about where I'm at now, and I have 6.5 years experience. Roughly 48k gross per year which is definitely higher than your 30k mark, and it's not a job you would really have to take too seriously. I'm considering downgrading myself a bit though for school. I can take a job where I make around 35k per year with zero resonsibility and I'll only have to work around 30 hours a week. |

I personally like the idea of grad school. I got an assistanship which pays all the bills for school and living alone, plus I get a stipend. Basically if I just did grad school with the assistantship, all money stops as I have no new debt and get paid enough to eat and have some fun on the side. That part is really nice.
As for "getting a job in the real world" I would suggest it only if you are happy in that career. Our parents live in the generation of graduate, get married, get a career, and off you go. I do not agree with this unless the person is happy in their career. There's too much focus on living the robotic life. Basically, I support doing what you want but if you need cash, you need cash. I just hope you have plans beyond that once you financially recover. |

F3lix I was unaware they gave Masters in Tuba, are you going to pursue a Phd. in Tuba? Perhaps write a thesis about the interworkings of the Tuba?
Blonde, I went through the same shit when I dropped out of school at 20 and took a real world sales job. I hated every second of it and realized I was way to young to pursue that opportunity. Therefore I went back to school and love it, anytime I need motivation I just think of selling again. The only thing I'm dreading now is graduating next year, I'm not ready to find a job. With a Management and Information Technology double major I should be alright but I'm not sure I'm ready to handle a career. |

I'm doing a masters in wind conducting (band conducting.) With that, I instantly add about 20% to my starting pay if I get a high school band directing position. I honestly went to grad school because I felt I wasn't competant enough to be in control of students' education. After that, I might go back and get my doctorate in music with an emphasis in wind conducting. All are options.

This thread makes me realize how lucky I am. I want to post; I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I pretty much have it made and I'm loving life right now. It is possible for you to find a good job which pays well and is something you love. Or maybe thats just me. I work in securities trading: basically the "best of both worlds."
I have a career, but its an insanely fun and fast paced one. We work our asses off, and the level of excitement rivals most dull professional sports. We get paid very well. I just got a bonus and a raise for doing something which I find intellectually stimulating!? Is this fucking real? I'd say I got this job mostly because I was lucky, but also because I didn't admit to myself ever that I'm a loser and because I'm willing to stick my neck out every once in a while to try to get ahead. But mostly because I'm lucky. Right now I'm low man on the totem poll... but i'm going to be the best fucking trader ever. My next move is to go back to London and trade there. I'm going to start coming in to work every day at 5am to sit with some futures traders who are going to show me the ropes in preparation for my move to London. Long story short: Even if you are from Indiana you can get lucky. And it is possible to find a real job that you like. |

Not me, not at all. Luck isn't something i've ever been very privy to and i'm really wondering when I'll get my shot at it. I know with the small amount of luck I do have, I for damn sure don't let them slip away. Ever.

I'm in the situation that many of you probably avoid like the plague...but perfectly happy with it. I got a programming job out of college, pretty much the job that I had planned on having once I decided computers were going to be my focus. I do plan on making it a career and really don't have any qualms about that. Yeah, I spend a vast majority of my days sitting at a desk...but I'm also doing the shit that I like. I mean, even when I have free time, I often just sit in front of a computer and dick around...making things like Nubblies. Now I make shit for other people and get paid for it.
Right now my job is perfect for me. It allows me to show up to work pretty much when I please, work 40 hours (or more if I want, whatever) a week, go home each night and completely check out of work mode, and go do whatever I want (within reason) without constantly checking my bank statement. On top of that, I'm learning much more about everything I touch on the job than I even came close to in my 4 years of school. When I decide to let my career become a larger part of my life, I'm not going to have any problem making that a reality...whether it be through my company or, more appealing to me, personal ventures. |

I really don't want those of you who are currently happy in your paths (GWB, Gaz, F3lix) etc, to feel bad or think that we (I) hate you guys for liking what you're doing. Not that you're doing that in the first place, as it's nubblies and I doubt most of you care about your impact on others about what you write on here, as you shouldn't; this is and should be a place of free speech.
The point of this thread was basically just to feel out what other graduates are doing, and how they're liking it. By no means do I wish any malevolence on any levels to Nubblites who are doing well, obviously that's going to happen to some people right out of college and I am fine with that. I really am glad for you guys, if for nothing else so you don't have to go through the ridiculous bullshit I am having to suffer through right now. And it's not like I couldn't be where you guys are. But I know those of you who are happy in your careers currently, and i'm pretty positive that you guys wouldn't be there if you didn't want to be. I doubt many people who call themselves a Nubblite would. And that's fantastic. Thing about me is, is that I couldn't be happy and making decent money in anything that I'm aware of right now. That just happens to be my situation. It sucks balls, but I have to deal with shit the way it comes. Life doesn't always play fair, and that's something every single one of us is going to have to come to terms with sooner or later. As cliche as it sounds, I really do believe it's how you deal with the situations you are given that defines who you are. I really don't know how I'm planning on dealing with shit right now. I know I can't just "give up", for one because that's not me, and for two because there really is no "giving up", unless I want to abscond into drugs and/or death, which obviously i'm intelligent enough not to do. So I just have to figure out the path for me. I just can't shake the feeling that this reluctance to settle for....ANYTHING...is a clue that i'm meant for something more. I don't know. Anyways, i'm kinda drunk, so this probably comes off as jibberish. But bottom line, I am srsly happy for those of you who are doing what you like post graduation and making money doing it. |

Unless that's not what that movie is about at all, in which case nevermind. After I posted that I realized that the name of the movie is 10,000 BC, not 10,000 BC: The Year the World Was Created.

I make bad decisions.

I'm pretty content with where I'm at right now. My goal was to be a federal agent by 28, and I got there at 24. I still intend to try to get into ATF or FBI, but right now, I'm enjoying my job. The pay and benefits are pretty good, I get to work outside for the majority of my days. I can go kill time by hiking through mountains from time to time. I get to drive off-road vehicles. In about a year and a half or so, I can try out to be a professional badass that does nothing but respond to crazy situations throughout the world.
There are some downsides, such as having to live where I do and being kinda far from bigger cities. Really the only friends that I have acquired are the ones that I have made through work. Odd hours from time to time. The whole, lots of people don't like me and want to kill me aspect kinda sucks. The communication barrier is kinda bothersome at times, but my Spanish is coming along. I would still like to eventually own my own business someday. |
