With current spaceflight technology, this would still take 100+ years to get to, possibly 200+, so it's still a long ways off. But I don't doubt that more discoveries like this will help to fuel research into faster and more sustainable space travel. I'm pretty excited, this is our best bet at expanding into the galaxy so far, but there are many other possibilities....

Three times the gravity of Earth, tidally locked, atmosphere of CO2...doesn't sound habitable for humans at all. Still, the fact that there is liquid water and an actual chance of life, albeit unintelligent life, adapted to this environment is very exciting.

The last space shuttle launch with no replacement program on the table or even on the horizon actually has me pretty bummed out. Letting the shuttle program lapse may be one of the most historically saddening moments in human history. I fear with the state of politics and the general societal skepticism against the value of "big science" will keep us from ever having a manned space program ever again.

To be fair, while i'm just as depressed as you and angry at the American public/politicians that let this happen while our war budget is so god damn high, there is a lot of potential for our astronauts to hitch rides/work with the private space industry. Space X and Virgin Atlantic are going to play huge parts in scientific advances in the next 50 years I think.

Also, all it's really going to take is China, Dubai, or Russia going back to the Moon or Mars to get MURRKAAA interested again.

This is true, but also my fear. I really feel that space is the best hope for the future of humanity, but I don't want it to be commercialized and privatized. One thing NASA brought forth was a collaboration that's goal was the advancement of humanity and science. When you privatize the universe, it more or less places the future of humanity in the hands of a board of directors ... not exactly a dream scenario.

That's true, but it may be a necessary step at this point in time. Think of it this way; when it came to ships back in the day and going to other countries, you had to pay a private ship, either a shipping or passenger vessel, for passage. The government may have done some regulating/taxing but the actual expeditions that involved most of the common people were done by private shipping companies.

I can easily see private industry making all the necessary advancements to go off-planet, then the government coming in and bringing their own cheaper, tax-payer funded means piggy backing off the technology that has been developed.

Just watched Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking on the Discovery Channel. It gives the best visual explanation I've seen of how the universe came into existence and other physics concepts like galaxy formation, star formation, black holes, etc. Highly recommend DVR'ing it or seeing if you can watch it online somehow (though the graphics kick lots of butt on a big, HD screen).

On the same note, Through the Wormhole hosted by Morgan Freeman is fantastic. There are 8-10 episodes out on various topics, each of which has been very interesting thus far. Some topics that come to mind are things like "Is There an Edge to the Universe" and "Are There More than Three Dimensions."
