On September 19th 2003, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be performing at the Tweeter Center in Chicago, Illinois. In attendence will be Pliedes, Titan, Ugly Bastard, and myself. An actual review will be coming as soon as the show actually happens.
I am just announcing the opening acts for the others that will be going. They are French Toast and Queens of the Stoneage. I found this information here. I'm very excited about seeing Queens of the Stoneage. All and all it will be a very good show. [ September 05, 2003, 12:52 AM: Message edited by: tonguegina ] |

Oh, we will. It'll be orgazmic.
Tongue, I can't remember where, but I saw that the Queens would be done with the tour the stop before us, then French Toast would pick up... but regardless, the Chili site obviously trumps anything else, so I'm happy. We're all not doing anything the next day, so I'm up for hanging around for hours trying to get to meet the boys. Anyone else? |

Wow...just...wow.
I don't feel that I can describe this concert with all of the respect it is due. In short it was fucking awesome. Here's the long version...well for me. I'm sure Titan can and will do a much longer one. And remember, these are just my views, and are in no way reflective of the views of Nubblies and or the members of said message board. I. French Toast The opening act was so good, they needed an opening act. So a piss poor band was brought in to warm up the crowd. How many of you have heard and enjoy the music stylings of Radiohead?...*raises hand...Good. Me too. They're fucking phenominal. French Toast is a Radiohead rip-off band, but not nearly as good. First of all, it was a two piece band. We'll call them baldy and the other guy. Now baldy played drums and bass (he switched from song to song). He was a pretty good drummer, I'll give him that. Other wise the band sucked. They're lyrics were so trite and meaningless. Their first song was about what they ate for breakfast (french toast, suprise suprise), and the second about some old guy they met on the street. They also used way to much synth for a band in 2003. II. Queens of the Stoneage I was discouraged to hear that Dave Grohl would not be a part of the tour. This was what I overheard from the guy sitting next to me, and I just accepted it. He said that they had a stand in playing for them. Now we weren't close enough for me to tell for sure, so like I said I just went with it. However, I went to their official website today and found a picture of their stand in drummer. He looks nothing like Grohl, which leads me to believe that that was infact him. SCORE. I love Dave Grohl. He's phenominal. Just the fact that he plays every instrument well enough to be a part of the band with that instrument amazes me. I've talked about this before on here, so we're going to move on. Their set was really good. They rocked like I didn't expect them to. I'm not extremely familiar with their songs, but I knew them well enough to know that it was a good set, and for a second I thought they might upstage the Peppers. I prayed to God that that wouldn't be so, but nevertheless, they rocked. I'd pay to see them headline a show. III. The Main Event...RHCP From the moment they walked on to the stage, and I heard the opening riffs of 'By the Way', their opening song, I knew that my previous comment was false. There is no way they were going to be upstaged. With their phenominal energy and stage presence, the Peppers stormed the stage. Song after song were pumped out with hardly a break. Each one better than the previous. Their most rocking song was suprisingly enough one of the oldest that they played, 'Give it Away'. Every word to every song was known to every member of the audience. It was almost like a sing along. All we needed was a campfire, and it would have been Scoutmaster Kiedis. Anyway, there was so much energy, that I don't know how they could even stand by the end of the show. Especially Anthony Kiedis. When he wasn't belting out lyrics, he was dancing as if he was told he'd never walk again. He was all over the place. It amazes me. I could barely stand after the concert I was so worn out. Wow. For all of you Jonny Cash fans, they dedicated a song to him. It was about halfway through the concert when Kiedis announced this. Titan and I turned to eachother thinking that they were going to cover a Jonny Cash song. They didn't, thankfully. It's just not their style. They did, however, dedicate the song that is arguably the best song from their new album. It's atleast their most recent single. That's right, 'Can't Stop'. They played a handful of my favorites; 'I Could Have Lied', 'Can't Stop', 'Around the World', 'Don't Forget Me', 'Give it Away', 'Scar Tissue, 'Otherside'...the list goes on. They played so many songs. Anyway, the show was over with a lack of the song that started it all, the staple, the reason I listen to music today, 'Under the Bridge'. After a few minutes of cheering they come back out for the encore. One by one, I really liked how they did it. First was Chad Smith. He sat down on his perch at drums and threw out a couple of random rythems, sending the crowd into hysteria. Next was John Frusciante's turn. He came out and did a little solo, just him and his guitar. He even belted out some high-pitched lyrics for it. It was beautiful. Next was Flea, who did a song that we all thought was going to lead into 'Pea'...sadly, it didn't. After he was finished, however, came the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard. The opening riff to 'Under the Bridge'. It was fucking live, guys. They were right there playing 'Under the -fucking- Bridge'. Blew me off my feet. They did a flawless rendition of it, which I recorded two minutes of onto my cell phone in the form of a voice note. I would pay as much if not more to see these guys again, any day of the week. Just let me know, and I'm there. As if the songs weren't enough, the performance they put on was worth it. Phenominal. [ September 22, 2003, 04:04 PM: Message edited by: tonguegina ] |

Of course, Schroeder. Of course.
I couldn't mention all of the songs, because they played so many that I couldn't possibly remember them. They did alot from 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic'. If any of the others could come up with a more complete playlist, they're welcome, but I'll try here, in no order. The Power of Equality If You Have to Ask I Could Have Lied Give it Away Under the Bridge Around the World Parallel Universe Scar Tissue Otherside Get on Top Californication By the Way Universally Speaking Don't Forget Me The Zephyr Song Can't Stop Throw Away Your Television That's all I remember. I was suprised that they didn't play 'Dosed' or 'Soul to Squeeze'. [ September 22, 2003, 04:10 PM: Message edited by: tonguegina ] |

This show was quite amazing. I've never danced so much; twas great.
Hey tongue, btw, they dedicated "Don't Forget Me" to Cash, not "can't stop"... My favorite songs of the night were 'under the bridge' and the other one they did for encore. I was saddened that they didn't play anything from "One Hot Minute" though... |

I'm not sure.
I do remember the word 'firepower' during the chorus, so we might be able to go off that... Or I'm crazy. Which is likely. Let's go with that one. Pliedes is crazy. |

The Power of Equality was their last encore song. Not a bad one live either.
In related news, this was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Wonderful concert. -Ugly Bastard |

I was upset that they didn't play anything from 'One Hot Minute' as well, however at the same time, I can understand why they didn't. Frusciante wasn't the guitarist for that album, and while you can argue that they shouldn't drop it for simply that reason, you have to remember that Frusciante has done alot of drugs in his life. Maybe it's hard for him to pick up what Nevaro was doing. Plus he had all of his old songs to remaster when he first came back, then they wanted to put out a new record, in the form of 'Californication'. 'One Hot Minute' also isn't as widely appreciated as the three they played from. While the four of us thouroughly enjoy it, especially Titan, how often is 'Aeroplane' played on the radio? What about 'My Friends'? Of course they should be, but they aren't. Such is life, my friends. Such is life.

Actually, I hear 'My Friends' quite frequently on the radio, but that's also when they're doing those Flashback Retro Hour of Power programs, but nonetheless, it's still played alot when in the context of older songs played on the radio.
Which makes me happy. |

That's odd. I really don't think of it as a "Flashback" kind of song. It's only like 7 years old. I believe "One Hot Minute" came out in 1996.
I've heard "Me and My Friends" a few times. That was from one of their earlier albums that came out in the '80s. |
