Leonard Bernstein's Mass
Gentlemen,
One of (if not THE) greatest works written in the 20th century was Mass by Leonard Bernstein. This is a work that broke ground on every level. It is a multi disciplinary theater work that crosses stylistic, political and social boundaries in novel and inspiring ways. Mass challenges us to think about faith, humanity, war and responsibility...what could be more relevant today? Mass is a remarkable, visionary work with a kaleidoscope of musical styles that touches on themes of political protest, existential crisis and religious faith lost and found. Some critical reviews are found here Leonard Bernstein -- MASS It was the premiere work for the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. The work is so grand, it requires a minimum of 200 musicians to perform, encompasing choirs, winds, and strings. It has 32 individual numbers (songs) and runs approximately two hours in length. Bernstein was a jew, but held man very accountable for silly notions regarding religion. This masterpiece can be appreciated in each of the songs or in segments, but its true beauty and message are delivered when watching/listening to a straight through performance. I don't know of any available online, but it is one that I believe every person would enjoy. |
