I'm about 5 episodes in and it's very solid. Not quite Oz or Sopranos solid just yet, but approaching. I hear it gets there; HBO usually doesn't disappoint. It's pretty hard to go wrong with Buschemi as a gangster, Stephen Graham as a pre-celebrity status Al Capone character, and Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar from the Wire) as another kingpin.

I'd like to humbly recommend the show White Collar for your consideration.
It is identical to Burn Notice, except, instead of a burnt spy working with his friends, it's a captured con artist/forger working with the FBI as a deal to avoid being imprisoned. Muct like Burn Notice, each episode includes him being a badass to catch bad guys. Unlike Burn Notice, there are virtually no guns, but rather scams/impersonations/forgeries to get what is needed. Shit's good. |

I am reading a book right now that talks a lot about con artists, and I find the whole con artist thing fascinating as fuck. Their ability to manipulate and deceive other people, and the degree they play on people's predictability is really interesting. Makes one wonder how many times they've been conned in their life, even small-time things like social manipulation, without even realizing it. | |
Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

I'm in television heaven right now! Holy shit let's take a look at the awesome shows putting out new shit right now. We have Sons of Anarchy, The League, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Walking Dead, Dexter, and Homeland. What a fucking great fall lineup.

Nah it's not that bad. I think you might be confusing the show Dexter with yourself.
I think your reason for feeling that way is because the story felt kind of static, like it wasn't progressing anywhere. This season the story finally seems to be progressing in some kind of direction. The characters and their relationships with one another are evolving-at least Dexter's relationship with other characters is evolving. |

Dexter is one of the greatest seasons of a show in television history. Unfortunately, they kept making seasons after the first ... and they've all been pretty fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, I actually thought it was a pretty decent show.
I think its fatal flaw was being on a piece of shit network like ABC. Had it been on any station other than a shitty network, I think it could have done okay. Maybe not like a Walking Dead or Breaking Bad kind of hit, but it could have had a good 5 season run or something. I'm not complaining though, had that happened, we'd never have seen Anna's titties in Homeland. |

I just started watching Neon Genesis Evangelion.
It's an anime and takes place in post apocalyptic Earth where "Angels" (virtually indestructable monsters whose origin I haven't discovered yet) have surfaced for the first time in 15 years to terrorize humans who have mostly been driven underground/into fortress cities. Conventional weapons, including futuristic nuclear (or some other more-intense incendiary technology) is useless. For some reason, only giant mechs can counter these ferocious and (although i've only seen one) rather creepy beasts. The story follows a boy who appears to have some sort of genetic connection to the machines, thanks to his father, who is the grand designer of these machines and has been estranged to his son until he needs him presently to operate a mech against an Angel. I suspect he banged a bunch of women intentionally to have offspring who he can use for these machines, and he is very cold and callous to the children so far as I can see. "I'm using you to fight monster, get to it." Pretty shitty for the kids. Seems similar to Gundam or Big-O and other typical mech animes, but I really like the characters and plot in this particular series so far, and with English subtitles it and great animation, it makes for some pretty cool screengrabs. (DH will like that one ^ ) You can watch here if you want: Watch Shinseiki Evangelion Episodes Online | AnimeSeason.com Also the upcoming movie Pacific Rim apparently ripped off of this series a lot. |
