I think this is kinda cool. It can hold up to 555 passengers. Yesterday it flew for the first time, with just the pilots and a few crew members in the plane. They expect it to be servicing passengers sometime in 2006. They're still testing it right now.

There is something unsettling at being 30,000 feet in the air and the plane bumping up and down.
I get very religious in those moments. [ April 28, 2005, 12:02 AM: Message edited by: Repugnant Abomination ] |

Plus, if you die in a car crash, no big deal. You probably wont see it coming, and even if you do, it's like what 1/10 of a second of terror?
How long does it take for a plane to nose dive 30,000 feet? That's some scurry shit. |

look, i work in the aerospace business, so i have to say a few things about turbulence.
turbulence at cruising altitude will not bring your plane down at all. 1.the wings are made to withstand stronger than hurricane strength winds, so there is no amount of wind in the world that will tear them off. 2. the jet engines are not affected by wind, so they will not cease to function 3. a new boeing jet engine can tear through a 20 foot thick block of ice and not miss a beat. so anything that is blown into the engines as a result of wind will not be a problem. 4. are you scared of speed bumps? cause thats what turbulence is. 5. the only time people die from turbulence is if they are not wearing their seatbelt and it tosses them down the aisle. so keep yours on at all times 6. jets dont fall out of the sky. crashes occur at take off and landing (decent). you are the safest at cruising altitude, whether you want to believe it or not. 7.pilots dont even turn off the autopilot when they hit turbulence. dont you think that if it was dangerous that they would take the reigns? |

Well said, bloodyfart. I spoke with a guy who flew for American Airlines for 35 years. He said that there isn't a pilot in the world who can fly a plane better than the autopilot can. So anytime they're going through a storm or really shitty turbulance, they just sit back and chill, 'cause if they were to take over the plane, it would increase the passenger's danger (Not that there is any legit danger from turbulance to begin with). That's all.

I saw a documentary on the airlines, and while what you guys are saying is true, you're not looking at the whole picture. Bottom line is money in any business, and from what I saw there are certain problems with planes that the airlines may be aware of, but instead of recalling a shit load of planes cause of a flaw in the design (the example in the show had to do with the landing hatch gear. Something about the way it locks wasn't 100% safe) they estimate how many plane crashes out of how many flights there will be. Say 1 crash in a few million or something. So rather then fix the problem and save a couple hundred peoples lives every year, economically it's not worth it as it could cost billions. That kinda shit scares me.

Fuck all that. There's also the chance of dying from food poisening from eating sushi. You could also get cancer from using a cell phone. People who eat too much junk food can have heart attacks. If you don't have a carbon monoxide detector you could die in your sleep, etc, etc...

the faa is no joke; we get audited by them 3 times a year at a minimum. they are the one who decides if a plane stays on the ground or not. not the airlines. if the faa felt that it was a problem, then it would be fixed. that is the end of story.
conspiracy theorists will always come up with this shit. however, they have no idea about the amount of testing that goes into each part that is put on the plane. |

Good point. Like for example, the plane I posted in the first message of this thread starting being developed in 1995. 1995! That was 10 years ago, and it's just now finally taking its maiden flight, and won't be carrying passengers for another year still. There is an assload of testing that goes into this stuff.

So then how do you explain all the plane crashes? I know the ratio of plane flights to crashes is incredibly small, but it still happens on a yearly basis. I'm always reading about some plane crash in the news.

Look, it's as simple as this: NEVER will flying in a plane be 100% safe. There will always be a super slim chance of you dying. Always. But there is also the super slim chance of you dying from walking down the stairs to go outside, etc, etc. Basically, the fact that you're elevated 30,000 feet in the air simply escalates people's views of danger. Flying is incredibly safe. Far more safe than riding on a train, yet you wouldn't be nearly as scared if you were on a train were you? I think it simply comes down to people's biological fear of falling. Even though planes are incredibly safe, the 1 in a million chance that you end up falling 30,000 feet to your death is just too horrific for some people to deal with. And I don't think there's anything unrational about that.

"So then how do you explain all the plane crashes? "
many of them take place out of this country where the faa is not in place to watch over the maintenance of the aircraft. when was the last time that you heard about an american carrier crashing? btw, planes (not jets) and private jets dont count. they are not regulated like the airlines are. |
