Stalin admired him. The rest of Europe believed he was mad. What is certain is that he was one of the most ruthless tyrants in history. Ivan the Terrible was a cruel tyrant, who never knew the meaning of moderation; He drank too much, laughed too loudly and hated and loved too fiercely. And he never forgot anything. Ivan was definitely smart and despite his cruelty, his reign is known as one of the greatest rules in Russian history. The name 'Ivan the Terrible' conjours up images of senseless cruelty and paranoia. Yet, for many in Russia, he is a national hero. Ivan appears to be a man of huge contradictions - a man of God who personally tortured his victims and beat his own son to death; a hardened despot who often behaved like a coward, asking his ally, Elizabeth I of England, for political asylum; a man who believed himself chosen to save the souls of his people, but who brutally put thousands to death in carefully orchestrated purges. Ivan set up the Oprichnina, which became a separate police state within Russia. The Oprichniki, as its members were called, instilled fear in anyone they encountered. They dressed in black, the traditional colors of death, and rode black horses, from whose saddle hung two emblems - those of a broom and a dog's head. The broom signified the rider's mission to sweep Russia clean of Ivan's enemies; the dog's head symbolized that he was watchful for the czar. In 1570, on the basis of unproven accusations of treason, Ivan massacred the 60,000 citizens of Novgorod with his Oprichniki. Observers reported that so many bodies clogged the Volkhov River, which bisects the city, that it overflowed its banks. Not even the highest priests could escape from Ivan's Oprichniki. In the same year, there were mass public executions in Moscow. Ivan grew increasingly vicious and blood thirsty. So much that on November 19, 1581 he struck his eldest son and killed him in a violent fit of rage. This shocked him so deeply that he never slept properly again. It has now been determined that to treat Ivans arthritis physicians back then used high doses of mercury, something we now know can cause severe health problems in humans. He had over 10 times the ammount in his body that is considered safe and it is considered the reason Ivan was so insane. He was so parnaoid that he killed his servants and officers on a regular basis, accusing them of plotting to kill him. This was one bad mother fucker. |

this fool was nothing, read up on that crazy fuck peter the great. this guy used to keep midgets and practice dentistry, DENTISTRY, on his friends with no formal training.
sometimes he would have huge dinnres for his court and then announce after everyone had eaten that some of the food was poisoned. he was nuts. he died because he dove into a half frozen ocean to help rescue people aboard a sinking ship or some shit. |
