Wait a second... if quickly making decisions is the metric than I am a professional athlete!

The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.

So what makes something a sport?

AP's rule for determining if something is a sport has long been:

1) The game/competition must require athletic exertion of some kind; and
2) The winner is determined by a score or achievement.

Example: Figure skating not a sport by AP's definition. Some athletic movements okay, but you if you need judges to tell you who won, it's not a sport. Speed skating definitely a sport. Diving, not a sport. 200 meter free style, a sport.

But what about cage fighting and such. Bullshit. Unless there's a KO or submissions, it's just an athletic exhibition.
Where exactly is the rule against the score coming from a judge? Especially when the criteria is fairly clear and objective.

I can go for motocross as a sport; but car racing is motor-sport. Having to have that qualifier of auto means that it isn't quite a sport, IMO.

Yes you need physical skill, but the sport isn't really about the body performing; there is a baseline of physical ability, but after that increasing the performance of the body brings no benefit, and some great drivers don't even meet the baseline.

Baseball is still a sport, even if that game/series was fixed, as that was an abaration to the game; it wasn't how the game is played. Any sport can be fixed, and when that happens that particular event may not have been a sport, but the sport as a whole still is.

So how can an unfixed boxing match, like Olympic boxing, be a sport and not a sport depending on the outcome under this definition? If boxer A knocks out Boxer B, it's a sport. If both boxers give their all and demonstrate great skill and neutralize each others strengths, can it be a non sport. Suppose the boxers are just two gigantic fat asses in a super heavyweight match that really don't do much of anything but hug for three rounds before going to the judges?
Olympic boxing is a bad example, even compared to pro boxing. In olympic boxing the scoring is as simple as whoever lands the most punches wins. That could be handled by computers completely; would it then become a sport if we removed the people counting the punches? Right now a certain amount of judges have to hit the "punch landed" button within a certain amount of time of each other for it to count.

Not quite. The participating needs to make them athletes. Athletes can participate in a circle jerk, but they just happen to be doing so, the jerking doesn't make them athletes.

Scrabble is not a sport. Competition does not equal sport.

You could throw it under some "brain-sport" category if you stretch, but having to have some bullshit qualifier pretty much means no, not a sport.

Why is that? Also; judges don't award points in college wrestling, the ref does. Regardless, the system for giving out points is pretty clear cut and straight forward.

In nearly all sports, the referee makes decisions that can change the outcome of the game, or at least alter the flow of the game.

A goal is not a goal until the ref says it is, just ask Frank Lampard; how is that different than a takedown not being a takedown until the ref says it is?

Hell even in a no holds barred fight, a submission isn't a submission until the ref breaks it up, even a knockout isn't officially a knockout until the ref says it is. Home runs, touchdowns, baskets, trys, runs, wickets, they all require an official of some sort to say it counts.

Not quite sure about that beebs. The point is to figure out criteria for what is or isn't a sport. Circle jerking might be a sport if the object is first guy to finish wins. Sorta like a footrace. Now, I'd argue if after everyone is finished and you need a judge to tell you who wins based on form, technique, level of difficulty, etc., then I might think that's just a jerk off session. And then it's also gay. Disqualifying from a sport.

Good call on the boxing. I'll admit to not knowing what's supposed to be the criteria. However, we've all seen pro boxing where one person kicks the others ass and loses a decision. Maybe the computers would be an improvement in proboxing.

Not sure the amount of seriousness on the circle jerk example; but the point was just that athletes can do anything; athletes could sit in a dark room doing nothing; the act being performed has to qualify them as an athlete.

Well pro boxing the judging is more subjective (rightly so, since a boxing match is much more complex than the hardcore tag the olympics turn it in to) so a computer would be almost impossible.
