Wait a second... if quickly making decisions is the metric than I am a professional athlete!
|
The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them. |

Yes you need physical skill, but the sport isn't really about the body performing; there is a baseline of physical ability, but after that increasing the performance of the body brings no benefit, and some great drivers don't even meet the baseline.

You could throw it under some "brain-sport" category if you stretch, but having to have some bullshit qualifier pretty much means no, not a sport.

In nearly all sports, the referee makes decisions that can change the outcome of the game, or at least alter the flow of the game. A goal is not a goal until the ref says it is, just ask Frank Lampard; how is that different than a takedown not being a takedown until the ref says it is? Hell even in a no holds barred fight, a submission isn't a submission until the ref breaks it up, even a knockout isn't officially a knockout until the ref says it is. Home runs, touchdowns, baskets, trys, runs, wickets, they all require an official of some sort to say it counts.

Good call on the boxing. I'll admit to not knowing what's supposed to be the criteria. However, we've all seen pro boxing where one person kicks the others ass and loses a decision. Maybe the computers would be an improvement in proboxing.

Not sure the amount of seriousness on the circle jerk example; but the point was just that athletes can do anything; athletes could sit in a dark room doing nothing; the act being performed has to qualify them as an athlete.
Well pro boxing the judging is more subjective (rightly so, since a boxing match is much more complex than the hardcore tag the olympics turn it in to) so a computer would be almost impossible. |
