Mccain is neither of those things, and hes always been a moderate in the republican party. but unfortunately, to win the election you have to satisfy the either of the two bases of our two party system. Thats the nature of American Politics.
Its true that most republicans are christian, but to call them all religious nut cases is a stretch. There are a lot of people I respect that are religious. The people you refer to and have personal experience with are a radical minority.
