I can't say from memory that anybody, in anger, has ever called me a white epithet, so I don't know how I would react if they did, although I'm sure i'd be pissed, moreso at the fact that anytime somebody insults you while angry it's pretty much inviting a fight IMO, regardless of what is said.

my best friend down here is a black dude. I've said "nigger" around him before. Its happened twice that I can think of. Once we were just talking about the word and what it meant to him. At one point during the conversation, there was a group of three ghetto ass dudes, walking around trying to act badass in a pretty chill bar. Dudes were just walking into people and started running their mouths. I said something along the lines of, "that is the epitome of nigger." He responded with a "yeah, pretty much. Stupid motherfuckers."
The second time, was during a fight. Black dude called me a "cracker-ass motherfucker" while getting in my face. There was a lot of shit talk throughout, but once the N-bomb was dropped, it was actually a fight. After the fight, I actually apologized to my friend for using it. He laughed about it and said it was no big and that he understood how it came about.
I mostly hang out with hispanic dudes down here and he's one of about ten total black people at our station. We all throw racial jokes at each other a lot. From an outsiders perspective, it probably looks horrible, but I would say over the past 2.5 years, we've become like family. It's weird.
