As long as we're talking about Geordi, why did they always have him examine stuff with the different spectrums his visor can see? You'd think they'd be able to implement those same scanners on the ship.

I understand this makes sense in regard to moving the plot forward, but do they ever explain why they send out high level officers from the bridge for their A and B teams? The constant replacing of the first two especially bridge officers (usually Geordi and Data) is kind of annoying.
